When connecting a laptop to a TV the TV will work as another monitor. You can not magically stream the TV content to the Laptop. It does not work like that.
You could however purchase a USB TV Tuner for your laptop and plug your coax line into the laptop and view shows that way, but not how you are thinking. -
I may not of made myself clear what I want to do is stream the movie from the laptop to the TV screen,
thanks -
Yes you can put a dvd movie in your laptop connect the lappy to the TV via HDMI and watch it on your TV. i think thats what your getting at.
-
Yes thats what I'm after except I was going to watch the seires Lost from the ABC web site using my computer as the source and the TV as the viewing means.
-
ya it will work the same as the dvd thing though im assuming the lost episodes are in some other format besides dvd from the sound of it. so youll just need a program like VLC media player or depending on which dvd program you have installed on your lappy it should handle AVI/xvid as well.

Thanks, one more question, how to get the sound to come out of the TV speakers, is that part of the HDMI cable's good points.
-
ya HDMI is sound and Video combined.

If you end up with Video and No Audio in Vista via HDMI, check your settings:
1. In Control Panel, open Sound.
2. Choose SPIDF as your default audio.
3. Access SPIDF properties. (This can be done by right clicking the image in the sound control panel and choosing properties)
4. Once there, click on the Supported Format Tabs.
5. Put a check in the Microsoft WMA Audio and deselct the other choices.
6. Click on APPLY and then OK.
You may have to reboot for the settings to take effect. I did not have to reboot. -
Thanks for the above post, because I dont get any sound from my TV just the laptop, I will try this tomorrow. This laptop plays great on a TV with the HDMI cable.
-
Just remember though that the audio output for HDMI will only be in two channel stereo not 5.1, so if you are going to hook your laptop up to a receiver or such for surround sound it won't natively support it.
-
I tried using the SPIDF settings like suggested and I still got no sound from the TV speakers, is there something else to try.
Thanks -
Are there people who have big nice HDTVs without matching 5.1 surround receivers? heh
On my T series. Under sound I have 3 options, the SPDIF, HDMI sound, and built in speakers.
The SPDIF I believe is NOT part of the hdmi sound, thus why it has it's own separate settings. The SPDIF the T series is because we have optical output for digital audio built into the headphone jack. This passes through the digital signal for our surround receivers to decode.
The HDMI output however, yes it outputs sound, but as verified MrD1sturbed it does not pass through the digital audio stream, this ruins the whole point of HDMI in my opinion especially if you invested so much on a receiver that has HDMI inputs.
So Bad_Robot, if you are trying to hook up to surround system, hook up the SPDIF via optical from the headphone jack.
If not and you are just using TV speakers, it should have different settings under HDMI audio. If your sound settings don't show 3 different ones, update the drivers. I got mine from realtek and they are labeled ATI HDMI audio.
Check your TV settings as well.
