In the last few weeks I had Hp HDX9320, Toshiba X300-11s and finally i bought Gateway p-7811 fx.

HP seems to be the best build quality but I had 2 units and 2 were faulty.
( dad pixels and hissing sound coming from the lcd connector )
    Hp tv tuner sucks.
I was playing supreme commander on Hp and I was not happy at all.
    1680x1050 high details shadows off.
Plus - very quiet when browsing internet ( idle )
    3d mark 06 = 8000 marks ( stock )
HDX was finally returned and i got my refund.
    price 1280 UK sterling = 2300 US

Toshiba - laptop was faster then hp in supreme commander but resolution was different ( smaller )
1400x900 high level of details shadows off
    3d mark 06 = 7600 marks ( stock )
Fan noise was annoying when browsing internet. keyboard - very poor quality. laptop was looking like a toy from the toys shop.
price in the uk 1200 sterling = 2100 US dollars.
I returned this laptop and got my refund again.

    Gateway p-7811 fx
Supreme commander 1600x1200 high details shadows off - fluent. I was happy. Way better then x300 and hdx.
    3d mark 06 = 8722 marks ( stock driver )
keyboard is solid and build quality is better in my opinion than toshiba was but still not as hdx.
minus - fan noise when browsing internet but it is less anoying than in x300
price 1680 US including shipping to the UK. ( ebay ) VAT paid at 102 sterling = 180 USD ( value of the laptop was 700 US for customs ) total price 1860 USD.
minus - no warranty in the UK. Gateway UK will not support you laptop.
Plus - excellent screen FULL HD

I am happy with the gateway laptop. Thinking about upgrade to P9500 to get some extra marks is 3d mark. Gaming experience is way better than in other 2 laptops that i had in the last few weeks.

even at full retail going through the proper channels you could make a lot selling this computer in the uk.

To defend the x300- it has vastly better speakers (possibly the best within its class), a much sturdier build quality and errr a fireshark design. Pwnt. And a remote control.

With another user posting a benchmark of 9554 (11w) on 3dm06, and the tosh being modular as far as most can tell, one can easily push it a little harder.

It is about twice as thick and you have to OC the heck out of it's GPU because of the smaller number of SPs.

Honestly, if you can get hold of one there is nothing the beats the 7811 in value. The build quality stuff is nonsense as the 7811 is quite solid.

The speakers really do add an extra thickness to the laptop, but if decent sound is also a requirement, it's worth it.

Another reason for the thickness is because the heat dissapation fins span the entire thickness of the laptop. This means that the system barely gets warm and heat is always an issue in this class of laptop.

But I can guarantee that the x300 is built like a tank in comparison.

I had x300-11s. Speakers were ok but i returned as i was unhappy with the gaming.
The best speakers for music are located in Hp HDX laptop. Even toshiba's speakers were not great as a music option. I will go with good head set when gaming.
x300-11s had 2.4 CPU and bigger hard drive than us model.
Screen was ok. Resolution only 1440x900 . It is a good screen with no ghosting problems.
X300 was heating. Fan was almost constant on and was annoying me more than gateway was. chasis was very warm at the top, in the middle on top of the keyboard.

toshiba's keyboard was very poor quality. it is not solid. When i press it i just felt like the keyboard will deflect.

But the most important thing for me is ( within same budget ) overall performance.
3dmark score is higher. more than 1000 marks is a lot.
    Games are performing better.
In the gaming laptop you requesting gaming ability not a music possibilities with a good speakers. It is not really important. as always you can add external speakers. but can you exchange GPU ?

    Gateway will beat x300.
In the UK there is new qosmio x300-11w.

    take a look.

These 2 laptops will beat gateway easily. But the price.

Actually as far as has been noted in the Toshiba forum, the X300/X305 is modular, allowing the GPU to be upgraded. This is not possible in the FX, as far as I know.

Both great notebooks for different ppl, glad you like your current FX as thats all that matters.

I think the FX AND the X300/X305 series are probably good buys for economic gaming (relative).

Only problem is where are you going to find a mobile video card? Basically the only place is Ebay, and that's spotty as it is.
