What is the name of the driver of the CD/DVD rom on the P-7805u Win7 64 bit. I have uninstalled it because it was corrupt and can't seem to find the right one on the gateway site. Of course crap like this happens when you are trying to back up info prior to another mod. Go figure.![]()

Lil' help?
 -

Nothing h e r e ?
Did you try letting Win 7 search for the drivers in Device Manager? -

Yeah, I tried letting Win 7 search a couple of times. It kept saying that I had the latest driver installed. When i went to trouble shoot it, it said it was corrupt and it suggested uninstalling driver and reinstalling which is what I started to do, only to realize that I don't know, of all the driver files I have, which one is the right one. Since I can't find the device anymore, its kind of tough. Just asking if someone has recently done this, what is the driver name? Thanks in advance.
As far as Gateway site, that was the first place I went to, but nothing there screams out "optical device driver". -

Did you try:
Device Manager -> Right Click on DVD/CD-ROM Drives -> Scan for Hardware Change
It should detect your drive and install automatically. -

Did that in above post. But since I have uninstalled the corrupt driver, the "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" doesn't even show up in the device manager.
 -

Have you tried rebooting?
 -

 Yes, several times.
 -

You can Right click anywhere to do "Scan for hardware changes" it should work.
I just tried it myself... Deleting the CDROM device and then scanning and it found it right away. -

Okay, delete your cd rom driver and then do that and see what happens.
 -

You mean the file itself? cdrom.sys?
 -

I mean the actual cd rom device "driver".
 -

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing... lol
The only driver for CDROM's or DVD's is the generic driver that comes with Windows... a file called cdrom.sys in the System32\Drivers folder
If what you did is Uninstall the device in the device manager, the file should still be there -

Go to device manager> cd rom> properties> and under one of the tabs you will see the driver with a number, something like "6.1.5911" or some such thing.
Right now I am at work and will have to wait until I get home tonight to try anything. -

This screen?
Attached Files:

 -

Yes, that screen. when I uninstalled the driver. Cd rom no longer shows up. Where can I find the driver?
 -

Cdrom drivers are not provided by Gateway, they come with Windows... its a generic driver that "talks" to the cdrom/dvd's firmware...
You can't download it... it's not like a Graphics or chipset driver.
You need to try what I suggested earlier, if that really doesn't work you could try to physically remove the DVD, then boot into Windows, turn it off, reinstall DVD then restart... Windows would then search for you DVD and automatically install the driver -

Thanks, will have to try later.

Okay, got home and started it up and right away the new device notification came up but wound up not installing because the driver is corrupt. When I look under the Cd rom properties tab I get the same message as before. How can I fix this?
      -

Nevermind, fixed it here:
Your CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media -

Well, waddaya know -
Microsoft's "Fix It" actually did!
      -

Yeah, who da thunk it? It was the last place I looked.

HELP!!!! Somebody please!
