Hello, I was looking for some help... I have a Gateway 6831FX laptop, but i came across a 7808u FX MOBO (Quad Core), So I bought a Q9100 CPU and some 1066mhz RAM, and swapped the motherboard. When i first did the install i noticed that it wouldn't come on. I back-tracked and found that the spring-screw that secures the heat sink to the Northbribge had pulled the screw housing from the MB. So, I pushed down on it with a finger and it started up and windows proceeded to load. So I cut it off, got some glue, and firmly seated the screw housing back into place, using minimal glue. I put it back together and it turned it on only to find that the fans would come on, the lights would come on, but the screen didn't come on. So I took apart the whole computer, and put it back together. Now the computer doesn't even come on.
I'm wondering what could the problem be? Could it be a problem with the north Bridge? Nothing smells burnt... The RAM and CPU are properly seated...

One thing I noticed, but doubt would be the problem, is that the Media Bar is Different in the 6831 from the newer FX laptops. The 6831 has a standby button in between the power button and the dvd Controls, the newer models do not. On the circuit board underneath, the power button is on a different board than the standby button and dvd controls. At the spot where the ribbon from the power button connected to the MB on the 6831, nothin is there on the 7808u board. So the power button isn't connected. I've been trying to turn it on using the standby button. I assume that on the newer models the power button and dvd controls are on the same board, but I'm not certain

PURE Speculation here; It could be the post is connected/soldered to the mainboard electrically so that the board needs to see all five posts connected by the spring legs and spring to power up. This would prevent powerup without a properly attached heatsink. If this were true the glue you used may be acting as an insulator.........

Yeah, that makes sense. I'll try to clean the glue off and try again. Hopefully that works. Can't wait to see benchmarks...

As in you cleaned it and now it only works when pressed down or it still won't work at all now?

I cleaned it up, but it doesn't start up. The lights and fans comes on but the display doesn't. I tried pressing it down again but to no effect now.

I doubt, other than a bios mod, you can skip this. You could physically mod the board if you find the traces, not something to take lightly. It may be looking for an active ground but you would need the schematic to be sure and to see if the HS needs to see the ground for the other legs or if the board needs to see the ground from the HS..........

Edit; you could take out a multimeter and test the contacts and HS looking for power and or ground and/or lack there of..........
