    Thank you for your time.

    Looking to buy the 7801 or 7805 with a 1900 x 1200 display. :D

Can you tell me the differences in both hardware and software?
And the advantages and disadvantages between the two machines?
Aren't 7801 and 7805 basically the same machines?

I'm really falling toward the 7801 at TigerDirect? What do you think?
I want to be able to do the same software and hardware Mods as
    you can on the 7805.

    Thanks So Much :)

It's sure hard trying to buy a new laptop. Take so much research.
Hope I've finely found an answer in a Gateway P-7801 or P7805. :D

I couldn't find the 1920x1200 7805 at local BB's, so got the 7801 from Tiger Direct yesterday. Near as I can tell it is identical to my friend's 1920x1200 7805. At least with the 7801 you will be sure of getting the hi res display.

from what i see the 7801 has a slightly different appearance, and a 1920x1200 res instead of 1440x900. id get the p7805 hands down as long as u get the 1920x1200 screen

the 2 machines look exactly the same (only diff is the screen)
i'd go with the 7801 just to be sure i got the 1920x1200...unless you want to go through the hassle of returning your lappy if you dont get the screen you want, and then comming up with an excuse for them to let you go through their machines until you find a 19x12...
I have a 7811 btw ^^ (and proud of it)

I have a P7805-u and am very happy. I was an early addopter so I it was an easy find for the 1920x1200 screen. Today I would go for a P7801 as the screen is that important to me. For the life of the system the screen is the most used part of the computer and probably the biggest part of your computing experience, be it good or bad!

Can anyone tell which 1900x1200 screen looks better between the
    7801 and 7805?

Side by side my 7801 with my friend's 7805 (1920x1200) the displays looked identical, with similar color, brightness, sharpness.

Again the only difference was my 7801 has an Hitachi HD, same capacity and speed.

The price was good since TigerDirect/CompUSA didn't charge sales tax and had ground shipping for $2-3.

    bah, 7801 and 7805!

    7811 FTW!

Just speaking from personal preference, I would got for the one with the Hitachi drive. I was easily able to pick up a matching Seagate for my 7811, but that was only because the 7811 came with another one and I just didn't have the money to blow on 2 new Hitachi drives. Screen is also a big factor for me, 1440x900 may have better game performance (lower res, less work for the card), but 1920x1200 so pretty and goes great with a Blu-ray drive (at least when I had one working in mine, waiting for replacement).

320gb 7200 rpm hitachi hd costs $60 on newegg only. its pretty darn cheap. tigerdirect had refurbish 7811 on fire sale for $749+tax
    about 2 months ago.

Don't buy it. Tigerdirect.com is having a 12% Windows Live Cashback program so you can get the 7801u cheaper than the 7805u from Best Buy. I just got mine for $1148.

The 7801u is better than 7811 FX because Gateway improved the heatsink (which is why the 7811 FX suffered so many heat problems).

And if anyone knows where to get that heatsink, please let me know. I've been looking for that thing for 2 weeks now.

No, see those are the old heatsinks. I already emailed them about that specific part, and they said that they don't have the new heatsinks. That may have changed, but I doubt it.

The P7811 as an issue with the tsz0 spiking. This issue happens as the system heat progresses and hits a certain point. The system is not really overheating, something flips the tsz0 to 98c and this causes the GPU to underclock.

This does not happen on all P7811-u's and there does not seem to be this specific issue with the 7801's or 7805's. From what I've seen all three normally operate within the same temperature ranges so the cooling solutions seem adaquate for all three systems. Apparently there is something wrong elsewhere, to date though Gateway hasn't apprently found let alone even officially aknowledged the issue.

    They have changed it.
Check out this review: Review. I believe in the second half of the video, he discusses how Gateway revamped the heatsink due to numerous complaints about heat issues with the 7811 FX.

If someone here confirms they're the new CPU sinks I'm so jumping on them, especially when I go to buy a new CPU.

I know that gateway has changed it, but I don't know if any parts suppliers are carrying the new ones. I'm considering just ordering it to see if it's the right kind, but even if it is, I'm not sure I want to spend money on it. I've been thinking about waiting until I have some free time and then returning the 7811 and getting a 7801. I'm still under warranty for about 7 months. But I don't know if that's a good idea. The 7801 won't have the tzs0 spike, and it'll come with a bigger hard drive, but I don't know how the 1gb 9800m gts stacks up to the 512mb version.

^ Why bother spending that much money? It goes against the 7805u/7811 FX/7801u's best bang for the buck selling point...

You might as well spend the extra on getting a more powerful laptop.

You know, I have had my eye on Sager's NP5797. The basic model is under 2k, and it has a GTX 280m.

And it even has that orange trim that I love on the 7811. It is very appealing. Of course I am assuming Gateway will give you what you paid, as I don't know if they even take returns. I got the 7811 for $1450. So I'm guessing it would be about a 400-450 difference (right now).

Ooh, and then there's the NP8662. It's same price as the 7811 was (base cost), comes with a GTX 260m, but it's a 15.4''. I could easily live with a smaller screen (and it can go up to 1920x1200), but I've grown to love my numpad. I guess both of these are ones to watch.

I checked my warranty agreement, and they do offer refunds, but only if they choose to do so, and it's a partial refund. I don't know how they calculate how much it's worth after x amount of time. They will probably first try to repair, which they won't be able to do. They say they can also replace it with a similar product. Depending on the amount of the refund, I may try to just send it back, but I'll probably have to pressure them to swap it with a 7801.

lol, I kind of wish I had got the Best Buy warranty. Then I could just step on the thing and return it to them.

I will wait for the next asus G50, it will probably arrive with GTX260 and numpad for a reasonable price.

You have to also consider the cost/benefit ratio of wanting to buy a new laptop. The 7811 FX has a lot of power to play the latest games (except Crysis). It can even play GTA IV at 1680x1050 (medium/very high rendering). If you want something more powerful for that much money on a laptop, then why not spend it on a DIY desktop? You can buy two cards and put them in SLI config, a 22 in'' screen 1080p, surround sound speakers, etc... It's not worth it at all to spend more than $1600 on a performance laptop unless you travel a lot or go to LAN parties.

lol, I'm building a desktop right now. Pretty powerful for about $1300. But I love having a gaming laptop because I can take that around with me easily.

I'm not really short on money right now, but I am short on time and patience. If I can get a better laptop, or a similar laptop with fewer problems, by trading this in, I'm going for it. It doesn't make sense not to. Of course I'll have to wait at least a month and a half. I can't afford to be without a laptop right now.

I consider myself a hardcord gamer even though I never overclock gpu's or processors. I gamed from Friday morning until 1pm today on my 7805u. I never shut down the computer and I ran hwmonitor the entire time. Guess what, My temps never went over 52C. We played every game in my sig at 1600 by 1200 or higher. I also ran about 12 benchmarks on Battleforge. Frontlines fuel of war needs to be added since we also played that game. My good news is my laptop has passed the lan party test with flying colors.
The 7805u with the 1900 by 1200 res screen is superb.
