So I ended up returning my 7811fx cuz it kept freezing mid-game. I tried reseating my RAM, updating all drivers, etc. What I'm afraid now is maybe I simply played games that were incompatible with Vista 64. I've heard some games were instable with 4gb of ram. I really want to get to the bottom of what in the world was wrong with the 7811fx I purchased, was it the hardware or the software...?

These were the games that would freeze up on me. They were all the latest versions:

    GRID
    Bioshock
    Quake 4
    Oblivion
    World of Warcraft

Now has anyone with a 7811fx been able to run any of these games fine for hours without any crashes/freezing? If so, then I know my 7811fx had a hardware defect, and it wasn't simply the games I played being incompatible with Vista 64 or with 4gigs of ram.

    THANKS

I read somewhere that WoW was defenetly fine.
Did you upgrade the various drivers as suggested by a number of users?

All of those games should have been fine on Vista X64. Actually I dunno about GRID but I know the other ones will work.

All of those games are fine on 64bit windows. None of them should have any problems.

you could play them with 2gigs of RAM or 200gigs of RAM and it wounldnt make a diffrence (they would still only uses the amount they need)

Have you checked your temps? Alot of people were having a hardware issue with their vid cards overheating pretty bad with the 7811.

Thanks people. That actually makes me feel better to know the 7811 I RETURNED most likely did have hardware defects. I would be so frustrated if the only reason it froze was because that the games I played weren't even compatible with Vista 64 + 4gb of RAM.

Mine is locking up on every game I play as well. I think I'm going to exchange it. Are you going to get another 7811 now?

SgtSpade...what games are you playing? Did you play Crysis because I know that game definitely should not crash.

What is your crash like? What I got from playing the games I mentioned in my original post was a frozen screen with a looping audio. I would have to do a hard reset. Happened 20min-1hour of gaming. There were times when I got to run those games for like 2 hours tho...

I would have liked to exchange it but they were out of stock. Now I'm without a laptop. Atleast I got a full refund.

I will confirm that my 7811 handled a 6 hour WoW session this past weekend no problem at all. That is all stock with no cooler and the laptop flat on the desk. The exhaust vent was super hot but it didn't even hiccup once with constant alt-tabbing out and audio playing in the background from football games.

Mine crashes in WoW after 45 minutes of gameplay.

On a side note, Guitar Hero 3 won't even boot up. The back of the box claims it supports 64 bit vista, but I get an error that says a 32 bit file could not be located.

Yeah Crysis is crashing on me along with every other game that I've played (from CS: Source to EVE Online) in that same fashion. Mine tend to happen in with the first 2-10 minutes though. I'm waiting for BestBuy to restock before I exchange.

Seems there are alot of these "faulty" 7811fx's that will freeze in games...

I am actually hesitant to try a second 7811 cuz I really don't want to deal with the same **** again.

i work in a fire hall and i have quite a bit of time to game. I have been running crysis at high spec for 4 or 5 hours at a time and it seems to do fine. I also play cod 4 for about the same time. I did notice that when i paly crisis around the 4 hour range i have to go to windows and let the gpu cool off a bit. I play both in xp pro 32 bit and vista 64 bit. Hope that helps.

Games should work fine. If anything, the GPU got to hot and therefore, cause your computer to freeze.
