Hi,
don't let the name fool you, I also have (and love) a 6831fx from Gateway!
The thing runs great, except I noticed subpar gaming FPS, so I checked CPUz and GPUz and both report my PCI link width as stuck at x1 (should be @ x16 as you all know).
What can I do to fix this?
I contacted gateway and asked for a BIOS update and they keep telling me there is no BIOS update.
The BIOS version I have is 94.26.00
I uninstalled and reinstalled video drivers and that didn't work. Should I uninstall any chipset drivers? and if so which ones?
I hope someone else has encountered this problem and knows how to fix it b/c it really stinks having a gaming laptop that has a PCI express link width at x1 with such an awesome video card!!!

i think it defaults back to 1x when your not gaming .As for subpar gaming performance do you have your power profile set to high performance ? Is norton running in the background ? have you thought about just formatting and doing a fresh install . Those are just somethings to think about because beyond that its hard to say whats wrong . None of us and there is alot of us ever needed a bios update to fix the PCI express bandwith so i doubt thats the problem.

Mine says Link Width x1, then Max Supported x16. Yours probably says x16, x16.
When I play 2142 i get around 33 FPS on low, medium, or all high settings, and my 3dMark06 score is a dismal 5,425 Marks. I have an x9000 CPU at 3.0GHz so my 3dMark06 should be close to 10,000.
I'm going to try to reinstall the Intel chipset drivers, but I don't know the proper way to do this without possibly damaging something?
I'd like to avoid doing a complete reinstall of the OS and everything else, as that takes hours and hours and is not a 100% guarantee either.

Yeah. Mine does say x16 x16, however mine is a 6831, and they own yo puny foo's 60's.
-
mine says x1 x16 like i thought.

I also have this issue. Any ideas?

Is it plugged in? Some people's video cards get underclocked, maybe that 1x PCI link when their computer is not plugged in.

PCI-E 2.0 x16@x1 while idle here. Jumps to x16 the minute the GPU is used in 3D mode. Tested with rthdribl.

Ya i figured it would go back and forth from 1-16 according to what you were doing but whats strange is stealtharcher's is always on 16x for both so maybe i need to sand the core of my cpu down and that will fix my problem
.

well if he disabled his powermizer it will stay x16

my powermizer is disabled Through the Nvidia control panel and in the registry and mine still says 1x 16 so i think his problems the OPs that is are something all together different.
HELP my 6831fx PCI link width stuck at x1, games stutter badly
