I'm sorry I wasn't very clear. I originally ordered a sony bc5500 from ebay becuase thats what the seller said I needed for my laptop. THe drive came with a copy of power dvd 8 ultra and played blu-ray disks just fine. after my faceplate did not fit he exchanged it for the ct10n which the faceplate fits just fine. This drive also came with a copy of powerdvd 8 ultra. For some reason powerdvd keeps saying some movies need an update to playback and I install it. It installs successfully so it says and just asks for the update again when I hit play. Keep in mind I did not reistall powerdvd 8 after swapping the drives. If I install anydvd hd which disables hdcp on the blu-ray drive all my movies playback. I have about 8 movies so its not like I'm having a problem with just 1. Also there a tool from nero which tests hdcp compatibility for the computer and my ct10n is not passing the test? I can't figure out why not since its working for other people. I live in the US and have vista x64. Any help would be much appreciated.

PS. I went as far as upgrading to powerdvd ultra 9 with no luck.

Well I screwed the pooch. I dropped the two screws that attach to the back of the drive and can't find them...

Gotta wait till I get home from work to dig into my replacement stash before I can put the BD-Rom in. And I had the software already installed and some movies all picked out to watch at work (Wall-e and Transformers). Maybe someone at work has a glasses repair kit, its for a good cause...me watching HD movies at work.

Does anyone know if they make a slot loading blue ray player for the p-7805u and the P-6831 fx?
also what is the current blue ray drive that I can buy, is it still the SATA CT10N Blu-Ray Reader DVD Burner? Its 116.79 on ebay right now. Does the hdmi still only support 2 channel stereo with a blue ray, and what is the best program to use for playing movies? Sorry for all the questions :)

The Sony one comes in a slot loading version, but you'll need to do something about the cover.

Just a quick question: some of the listings on ebay for the CT10N state that the drive offered is "[a] 12.7mm drive (SATA interface) [that] will fit most laptops that manufated in 2008 or later".

There aren't 2 versions of drive with different heght thickness, correct? The 12.7mm thickness will fit inside the 7805u, right?

Will the 7805u work with any slim SATA blu-ray drive with 12.7mm height?

anyone have an idea how to crack open one of those generic black optical drive caddies such the one pictured in this ebay link:-

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Slim-Bluray-C...trkparms=65:12|66:2|39:1|72:1683|293:1|294:50

it looks like the two halves clip together (after the drive has been unscrewed from the circuit board). I've already got one at home but trying to pry apart the two halves isn't working....i feel like i'm going to break it.

    any advice please?

So, is the HL CT10N Blu-Ray Drive still the one to get for your 7805 if you want Blue Ray? Or is there a newer drive out now? I'm thinking about making the upgrade. Thanks.

Also, would you recommend the HL-CT10N or the HL-CT10L? I wouldn't mind having the lightscribe but I want the drive the has the least problems playing Blu-Ray disks and working in the 7805.

RangerXML mentioned something about the HL-CT10L (f/w YC06, if i remember correctly) having incompatible firmware that required AnyDVD HD to be installed in order for Blu-ray playback to work on any software.

This is why i opted to go with HL-CT10N which has firmware WR06 and works straight off the bat; well at least, that is what i understood after researching several threads on the subject.

Most users currently use the HL-CT10N because it is cheaper than the Sony BC5500S and the faceplate is guaranteed to fit. I also chose it for the afore-mentioned reasons; wanted a hassle-free installation.

However, i distinctly remember seeing in a forum member's sig that his 7805u is equipped with a 4x blu-ray burner. The only ones that i can find on ebay are HP GBW-B10N so presumably, the bezel is also comptabile with this particular model.

Most people don't exactly have a choice with which firmware they got for the HL-CT10N, the replacement drive I got had the WR06 firmware and has worked with every BD I've gotten (up to Watchmen and Coraline, latest movies I bought). I so need to buy AnyDVD HD, they now rip to iso from Blu-ray movies!

so what exactly is a person to do when movies such as Coraline are available to rent but apparently do not work on the HL-CT10N drive?

how do you flash the firmware on the drive? Is a firmware upgrade even necessary?

No, I ment those were the latest movies I bought. I used them as an example that I haven't had any problems.

Plus if there ever comes a time that security becomes so tight that the firmware on my HL-CT10N won't cut it I will BUY AnyDVD HD, hint hint!

Hey i got a quick question, even though I have a gateway M-152xl, i'm guessing the drive install must be similar. My drive no longer works, and I've tried everything. Since I'm gonna change the drive I'm considering upgrading to a bluray drive since I have an hdmi port. So my question is this: how hard is it to change the drive? Do I have to remove the keyboard, or can I access the drive from the bottom panels? My laptop has a slot loading drive.

Just in case anyones wondering, my drive 1 year warranty is up :(

    thanks in advance!

Depends on how thick your drive is, my friend wanted to try and see if my drive worked in his HP, but it ended up being to thick; it depends on if its SATA or IDE; the P78xx are all SATA though there are plenty of IDE notebook Blu-ray drives on ebay; and how you remove your disc drive, in the P78xx its really simple, remove a rubber stopper on the underside, remove a screw and pull/push drive out. Put up some detailed pictures of the underside of your notebook and let me have a look, please block out your WINDOWS KEY and NOTEBOOK SERIAL NUMBER!!!

My drive is a Optiarc AD-7640A
    Interface: IDE/ATAPI

    Dimensions

    Width mm (in)128mm/5.04in
    Depth mm (in)129mm/5.08in

How about formatting them to be something a bit smaller than 2048x1434 for us mere mortals with normal sized screens :)

you wont really benefit from watching blu-ray movies on a 1280x800 screen; this is why I was kinda forced to upgrade my p7805u screen from its stock 1440x900 to a 1920x1200 after i installed my HL_CT10N drive.

meh, it will look fine on his display and he has HDMI out. I believe the "K" symbol is where you unscrew the optical drive. Check if that is SATA and get some numbers off that to get the specs on the drive (height).

Yeah I mostly watch hd through my hdmi port. I'm gonna see if the "K" symbol holds the screw I'm looking for. Two questions, Is this a plug and play install? Do I have to search for drivers/modify bios? Sorry for all the questions but this is my only computer, and for a college student I can't afford problems :)

I'm thinking about getting the UJ-225 thats on ebay for 190. Its a bit expensive in my opinion but I can't find a slot loading IDE bluray reader on ebay :(

Oh and thanks again for all the help. I'll post if I have any luck taking the drive out!!!

Here are the specs on the drive:

    Optiarc AD-7640A
    Interface: IDE/ATAPI

    Dimensions

    Width mm (in)128mm/5.04in
    Depth mm (in)129mm/5.08in

The P78xx uses the 12.7mm height SATA drive, its pretty standard, but there are plenty that take the slightly smaller version. I would wait to see if your drive is either SATA or IDE. I don't know any IDE slot loading BD drives, but just because they aren't on fleebay doesn't mean they aren't out there. You don't need to do any BIOS mods or special drivers, it should be plug and play (tentative).

I popped out my drive earlier today, and following your instructions, I unscrewed the the K bolt and another one and it slid right out; the easiest thing on the planet. It's an IDE drive. But like you said I haven't found any slot loading IDE bluray reader. The only IDE slot loading bluray drive on ebay is the Panasonic UJ-225 which happens to be a burner. Its a little steep for me, but If there's nothing else, I'll pull the trigger. In my opinion its not worth swapping in another dvd drive if I can play back hd through the hdmi port. Thanks again for all the help, it really has relaxed me a bit!

just had a quick look on ebay.com and i'm not sure what keywords you are using but when i typed " ide blu", it came up with variety of hits; the cheapest of which is a Sony BC5500A IDE BD-ROM drive for $78.

Sorry that I haven't given any updates, classes are keeping me busy. Well I installed it, super easy. I unscrewed the two screws, drive slid out, and changed the face plates, again super easy. Then I installed the rails of my old drive on the new one, and put the new drive in. Started windows and drive was instantly recognized.

It works amazing! Much faster than my old drive. When I pop in a disc (DVD, 1080p mkv) the UJ-225 seeks much faster. And above all what I love most, is that it's super quiet!!! My old drive sounded like a diesel truck! I haven't tried playing or burning a bluray yet, but will soon.

Overall this is a great drive, for us with IDE drives, I think paying the extra money is worth it.
