I know that these marks mean absolutely NOTHING in terms of realistic 3d graphics rendering, but I am trying to wager against my friend's cyberpower 7512. He knows very little about maintenance, so most of his hardware is in stock condition (or worse). I'm using xfastest 180.70's right now, which i've scored 9512 with. My cpu is overclocked (safely) to the max, and my gpu is (safely) overclocked to 600/950 (wont go past this without locking up). My machine is clean, thermal paste applied and i have a decent laptop cooler.
What can i do to hit 10,000 marks, guys?

Give me a screenshot of your 3dmark result. I will photoshop it to 10,000 if you like.

Personally id just set the notebook on fire and skip to the ending. But today ill save you from destroying your notebook.

You are already pushing your GPU and CPU. The only thing you can change is the driver. You can also lock your CPU and GPU to full thottle, this gets you extra points since they dont have to throttle from idle.

EDIT: actually just do the test on a lower resolution. That should easily get you 11k pts.

Not necessarily true, GENERALLY speaking, higher 3DMARK scores GENERALLY mean the cards rendering engine is more powerful. Prime example is comparing a 9600 to a 9800, different 3DMARK scores and definitely proves one is better.

Just a quick question, where in the NVIDIA settings to overclock the GPU?

You need to download an extra nvidia add-on (ntune) or install rivatuner. Either way i think you should research more about overclocking before attempting it.

Thanks for the answer. Just curiosity. I think I won't do it as the current spec exceeds all my games already.

I wouldn't reccommend doing it. The only time i OC mine is for benchmarking.

I get 10215 with DOX 180.70 drivers, X9000, and matching the 9800clock speeds.

If you go to the lowest available resolution you can get like 15000 :p

I lock my CPU multiplier to the max and use High preformance/High preformance

WIth the correct tweeking tools you can push it a good deal further, but its not really that important to me.

With the DOX 180.70 i actually down clock my GPU now when gaming because its so much more efficent i can run lower clocks and get a cooler GPU :p I shave off 100/100/200 from my (base) clocks pretty much at all times now

This is pretty easy. Firs you need to register your 3dmark06 software. Then go to Settings. Put a check box right next to disable post-processing and run the 3dmark. You should get at least 10.5K.

How high can you oc your shader clock? I've just recently started to oc my 6860, and my gpu clocks are 650/970/1495. If I bump the shader clock to 1500, I actually see diminishing returns and the gpu temp starts to go up. The highest 3dmark06 score I can get using 1280x1024 res (gotta hook up an external monitor) is 89xx. I use 'quality' for the texture filtering option in the nvidia display options, and I'm using 180.48 whql's.

If you live somewhere cold you can always carry it outside and increase your overclocks once it cools down...

Only to a point. Eventually GPU's will reach a point that they cant go any further with out giving you negative results (heat or no heat)

Yeah but 30-40 degrees off ambient is probably still going to net him some headroom. Our benchmarking team on ocforums has had a few people stick computers or watercooling radiators in windows to get those last few points for competitions and HWBOT points, lol.

try benchmarking with windows 7 x64, I got about 400 points more on 3dmark06 then with vista 64 ultimate. One of my setups is very similar to yours with the exception of a 64GB SSD drive instead of raid0.

I benchmarked in xp32, 6860fx, 625/900/1400 clocks, 177.85 xfastest. Default resolution that 3dmark used on my laptop.

I was able to net 11k+ sometimes, about 10.9k most of the time.

oops, forgot to say x9000 3ghz, that makes quite the difference

and yea, I have to run it at the ????x800 resolution, I don't have any external monitors to get the higher resolution on.

I can overclock my shaders to 1490 and game without any problems... you should be able to go higher than 1400 and hit 11k at that 1280x800 res. :p

I might try 650/925/1500 when I get home from classes today, I am running windows 7 so that has been making me score about 500 lower than I usually do, and the dox optimized has been making me score a little lower too. (but actual games run faster) If this can get me over the 11k mark in Win7 then I'll be one happy puppy.

Ps: Have I also seen you around the eeeuser forums madmook?

ok that makes alot more sense. I have a much larger overclock (only when benchmarking) and the same CPU and i never could break the 11K mark with native resolution on the 6860.

I havent even tried it at 1280x800 as i dont think i've ever used that resolution

I thought 1280x1024 was the "standard" free version resolution, whatever it is that's what most people use when comparing 3dmark06 scores. I think the older versions were 1024x768 default.

Those of us with lowly 6831 & 6860's only have 1440x900 max res, so we have to connect to an external monitor to get the "standard" resolution.

If your not using an external monitor the 6831 and 6860 will default 3dmark06 to 1280x800 since the screen rez is 1440x900. x7800, nvidia 179.28, 625/925/1250 overclocks scores me a 10200-10300 score running windows 7 beta.
