Hello I have the P-7805u Gateway laptop. It's running pretty hot, I already cleaned out the cpu heat sink fan and fins etc and it helped a lot. Until I have the time to get to the GPU cooling system to clean I want to undervolt the gpu and/or the cpu and turn down the clock speeds (core, memory, shader) of the GPU.
So some questions. What is the most safe and reliable Vista 64bit program to use for undervolting the gpu and/or the cpu? And what are good settings (that makes less heat, but provide enough electricity) to use for this model laptop?
I installed the nvidia performance control panel and can change core clock, memory clock, and shader clock of the gpu. But not sure if these settings should be set based on some formula, or do I just turn them down however I want...
Well any other general advice about about undervolting or underclocking I'd appreciate it, Thanks

Actually now I got some really low temperatures just using the nvidia performance, regular 3d settings, and lowering processor in advanced power management. If anyone's wondering I found that turning "threaded optimization" off in manage 3d settings generates less heat, as well as setting "max prerendered frames" to 0. In games that allow setting a max frame rate, a setting of 45 - 50 often saves on heat as well. I hope one day nvidia gets the idea and allows setting a max frame rate from the control panel for games that don't support it. VSync can be useful but on computers sensitive to heat fps may need to be less than 60.

What is your CPU? Only Core 2 Duos and earlier can undervolt. You can use RMClock for this. GPU is generally already optimized unless you want to mod the BIOS with lower voltages. My first advice would be to change the thermal paste though...

The CPU is a Core2Duo P8400 @ 2.26GHz. So lets say I load up RMClock, is there a fail-proof setting for this cpu (setting that will give lower temps, but always the power the computer needs)? Or do I have to experiment to find the right setting (like if it's different for each computer)
Any word on what settings to use for under-clocking the gpu, I just basically subtracted 200mhz from each clock speed? Seems to be working pretty well. Been running World of Tanks and Day Of Defeat source High or near High settings pretty smooth, even set pre-rendered frames to 2.
I'll replace the thermal paste (With ICD7 (for its thickness to fill in an extra gap on the cpu if I read correctly) on the cpu and gpu when I get a chance, along with pulling out the dust cake that is on the gpu heat-sink I'm sure. -
All stock you should not have to undervolt nor underclock the system to maintain reasonable temps. If you do then open it up and properly clean it along with checking to be sure all fans operate properly and maybe even replace the old TIM with ICD.
Since you are on Vista be user the bios is 9c.17.00 or lower too. All other bio versions let the GPU run much hotter by default before kicking the fan on. -
