I use AVG (their new version looks so much nicer than the old one) and it's free too. I prefer this over Avast Pro (not free). If you want to keep your system in tip-top shape, defrag your drives at least once a week (I use Auslogics, about 3 times a week), scan it with AVG, use CCleaner and clean it. I know some people are "cursed" with viruses and spyware but I haven't had any problems with those for many, many years now.

I use Avast on all my machines. It is free for personal use, gets daily updates, and is very light on resources (will run on a i486 66MHz PC with like 64MB RAM).

None since 1982. (well for a time I did but developed a hate for those resident evil system anchors)
-- I've gotten about 3 viruses over that time but I've downloaded everything on the internet (at least twice) and been in some pretty dark alleys --
I do set up the filters with SpywareBlaster and Spybot's "immunize" which seems to help.

***This may not be good practice for common mortals***

For others (especially Grandma) I throw AVG on.

I wouldn't use ANYTHING by Symantec if you water boarded me and pulled out my finger nails.

    Process explorer....

Oh wait. Automatic virus removal programs...ok. I used to use AVG, but it always seemed to lose its own files, so now I use Avast home (the free edition). It's stripped down to minimal protection. I normally just use it as an on-demand scanner unless I'm downloading something questionable or suspicious.

Nod32 on all of my systems.

Though i have (on recommendation) tried out Avira on my 6860, and so far it seems to do a very good job for a free AV program. It catches everything its supposed to catch, is pretty resource lite, and doesnt annoy me with prompts (except its own ads which is understandable due to its free nature)

I might actually switch to Avira, but seeing as its about the same cost as Nod32 i'm not sure.

Other than that i just use my hardware firewall and call it a day.

so let me see if i got it right, if you have a girl friend that objects to p0rn, you don't need an anti virus program ?

did she say that ? ;)

For some odd reason this girlfriend/p0rn thing reminds me of Dane Cook and his joke about the girlfriend searching for "apples" on Google and the stupid search bar had "asian ****" as one of the search option :D

You will need to upgrade to Norton Endpoint, that is the vista variant of Corp Edition. That is what I got from my work, and that is what I use.

Accidentally hit "Accept" on the Norton 360 thing. ("Nothing good will ever come from this")

My company requires Norton Corperate Edition for any computer that connects to the internal network, but they do not support it for Vista... No matter, the required VPN software bluescreens Vista 64.

Does anyone have the procedure to doing the same on Vista? rather on Vista Home Premium as I just found out that “secpol.msc” is not available on Vista Home anything.

Read in the comments ... second one down ... it talks about how to do it in Vista. I have not personally done it but sounds like it would work.

AVG 8.0 free. Used it for several years and put it on all my cheap friends/family and donated computers.

Haven't had any problems with virus' over the time I've used it, but can't say it's better than the other free versions since I have not used them.
