I was looking into purchasing a P-7811FX for the past week or so, and the combination of good reviews and 200$ off has tempted me to finally make the jump. My only question is...

I have about 150$ spare to spend on some accessories, and I was looking to buy either http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279 by itself

    OR

A good cooler and case/backpack. The laptop is mostly going to be staying on a desk, but I would probably need a relatively good case (the one I have is old and tearing apart) for the commute to and from work.

    Thanks alot :)

EDIT: Also, any good recommendations for a cooler? :)

why not just go for another one of the stock hard drives that come with the computer, so that when Gateway finally enables RAID support in the 7811, you can go that route without any wasted space?

as for a good cooler, I HIGHLY recommend the NZXT Cryo LX.

From what I've read regarding the history of Gateway's BIOS updates, I shouldn't expect to see one within a reasonable (4-10 months) amount of time, so the investment wouldn't be justified since technology/price can improve in that time-frame. Although I hope to be proven wrong :)

Regarding the NZXT, the price seems rather steep for a notebook cooler, does the temp drop justify it?

i have the 6860 with the NZXT, and i regularly see cpu idle temps in the mid to low 20's, and i have seen 50C under load only one time with the cooler. gpu idles at 41C, max temp 68C. i would say its worth it.

i would give you hard drive temps, but since i am running RAID in the laptop, i am unable to get temperature readings.

Have you ever considered one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997396 ? I thought about picking up one for my system since I got one for my brother a few months ago due to his laptop overheating. I currently use a Pacific Breeze, which is great, but the Antec is a bit quieter.

I don't think they sell Pacific Breeze coolers anymore. The a battery sticking out the rear of this Gateway makes it harder for the cooler to do its job though.

yet another reason to remove the battery from the laptop unless you need to charge it/move the computer somewhere temporarily.

    Two questions:
    1. Can you (again) tell me if you can run your cooler with USB. If no, how are powering it. I was not clear with the previous discussion. Thanks for your enduring patience.

    2. I have gone through the battery circus, in/out/freezer/underthetoiletbowl. What made you decide out was the winning ticket?

    1) i am running my cooler hooked into a usb hub, and the hub is connected to a dc to usb 5V power brick.

    2) i rarely ever take my laptop off of AC power, and didnt want to prematurely kill my battery due to constant heat. heat helps kill the cells in the battery faster.

if you need me to post a picture of how i have the cooler hooked up, i will. just not right now as i need to get to sleep before waking up at 5.

I think I have it but pics are always fun.

Good point on heat and battery. I forget about the heat part in the consideration.

That antec seems appealing, seeing as its under half the price of the NZXT Cryo. Has anybody ever used it with a P-7811FX or an equivalent desktop replacement with good results?

I have never used that particular antec model. However, I did buy it for my brother who uses it with an Inspiron 6000 and saw a world of difference in terms of its performance and heat dissipation (that laptop has the worst designed cooling system ever!). I personally use a Pacific Breeze, which is very similar to the antec link I showed earlier. The Pacific Breeze is a little louder, but it's about the same as the P-7811FX's left fan.

The only problem with these coolers is that the battery sticking out the rear of the P-7811FX requires you to get some inventive placement of the cooler. I've put clear plastic quarter-inch cube feet atop my Pacific Breeze in order to help it grip the bottom of the system better and clear the battery with ease (when it's inserted).

both antec notebook coolers are quite worthless for 17in notebooks. I've tested both with a ZD8000 and a DV9500t. Even threw a X305-Q701 Qosmio on the cooling pad, and found it did absolutely nothing.

pardon the crappy quality of the pics, but they were taken with my phone.

these two usb cables power the beast known only as Cryo LX....and a little product placement.

Not sure why but this line struck me as funny :) I have a small fan that clips onto my desk aimed directly at my gpu exhaust vent. It may not be the nicest setup but it keeps me and my computer cool and cost less than $10 at Walmart. With the money I saved I bought a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823161028&Tpk=merc stealth which when on red/orange backlight looks great with the computer and I highly recommend a dedicated keyboard/mouse especially if you don't move your computer often.

its definitely worth the premium you pay, IMO. before i undervolted the processor, without using the cooler, i would see around 34-36C idle and upwards of 60+ C under load. undervolting + cooler + AS 5 = cool computing bliss.

current temps while browsing/watching hi-def metalocalypse episodes with the GPU also powering my 32" HDTV over hdmi.
