So its been about a year since I got it and its now my only machine since my desktop went dead. I'm looking to upgrade it as far as it can be. I've already put in a 500GB HD in the 2nd hard drive caddy.
For processor whats the biggest baddest thing out there that works with it
X9100?
The Ram is already maxed at 4Gb right?
I'm ordering the Bluetooth Module off ebay
Blu Ray I found on ebay for about 110 is this it ?

Anything else out there I can throw in to max this sucker out?

the blu ray burner should be fine.
upgrade wise there is a few things you could do, you could add a new cpu, and yeah the x9100 would probs be the most powerful but it runs pretty hot.
also a proper hd screen, the one thats one it is 720 capable but not full hd, the screen is 1440 x 900 resolution, if i remember rightly, other than that there isnt much more you could do.
u can overclock the graphics card in it, windows 7 when its out, but thats as far as you could go, but its will be a beast, will last you a good few years. Probably longer -
mine is 1900x1200 so no problem running full HD
-
also are there any video card upgrades beyond the 9800?
-
-
nah dont want to do that
is the ram capped at 4gb? -
Max supported memory per Gateway spec is 4GB. Max memory supported per chipset spec is 8GB. Anything between 6-8GB might work but you won't know unless you try. -
hrmm if 8 would work that might be worth trying, ram isnt all that expensive
-
$400 bucks for 8GB DDR3 1066 at the egg, good deal considering that individual 4GB so-dimm still run under $400.

If you want to cheap out DDR2 is also compatible
The Asus' with the same chipset run 6GB DDR2.
-
DDR2 would be compatible if the laptop had DDR2 slots, which it doesn't. Someone reported that 8GB worked fine in one they had built (I think it was one of the guys who bought them, modded them and sold them on ebay).
As for CPU I see no reason to get the X9100 when the T9900 accomplishes the same thing, the 78xx laptops won't overclock past 3ghz. And the T9900 will put out less heat, though the X9100 may be cheaper, I haven't looked to compare the two. Personally I think I'll stick with the low voltage P series. -
T9900 is $340 at the HP parts store, w00t!

whats the difference between this T9900 and the X9100
-
Unlocked multiplier for the x9100 (overclocking), but the T9900 newer stepping and runs cooler.

Cooler temps and not haivng an "x" it its name.
If you could OC the x9100 would be better, but as it stands its the same in the 78xx lappies. -
i have no interest in overclocking, im mobile so i want some battery life
-
Our BIOS doesn't support overclocking anyway, so buying an X9100 is a waste.
SSD, Processor, RAM in that order. -
And ROM drive, Blu-ray notebook drives are cheap to get on eBay.
-
Get a NICE ssd, G2 80/160 for OS and a game or two. Add a second drive for storage.
The SSD is going to be the most cost effective upgrade in terms of user experience.
How Far can I take my 7811FX?
