i'm really surprised by these gateway laptops, i thought they flopped a long time ago... but they're making these great budget gaming laptops.... but best buys is the only place who sells them?

Declaring bankruptcy does not necessarily mean that you shut the doors. Many companies are able to declare bankruptcy (thus erasing some of their debt) and continue to operate for years after the fact. The company that comes to mind first is kmart. They declared bankruptcy back in 2002, and are still operating. MPC (the company that is Gateway) just declared bankruptcy in the past couple of months, and I'm not familiar with the case, but they may just restructure and continue to make computers... I would be very hesitant to buy one of their computers due to the uncertainty of getting warranty service/replacement parts in the future though.

Gateway desktops and notebooks dissapeared here in Australia when they went bankrupt.

yes it just probably gets creditors off your back for a while. nvidia comes to mind heh heh.

gateway was bought by acer and after that things started taking off..
really because of they awesome laptop builds for such a decent price!! its the cheapest gaming laptop you will find.
oh and their designs are much sleeker and functional now, not bulky at all -
Gateway just returned back to Singapore so I guess they're on a rebound. What's hilarious is their positioning of the 7811FX as a US$2000 laptop here.

so where can i find a nice selection of these 7811's? and hows the support/warranty/customer service from them? good/nonexistant?

Not sure. Gateway for a LONG time was a online/mail order company only with no brick and mortar stores, and they were very successful in that arena (I still tremember the fold out cow ads in PC Magazine in the early to mid '90s... gawd I wanted a handbook back then, but I digress) and they may be trying to get back to their "roots". -
That's the rub. You may not be able to get service if they close their doors for good. -
They were my personal choice for Pc's for years, had a HP here and there, but all 3 of my desktops and half dozen laptops I own now are gateways. -
Warranty is favorable too, I opted to have a desktop replaced while on warranty, gave them my credit card so they could charge it (charge comes off when they receive the item) but doing so I got my replacement desktop in 3 days, I know western digital does this but gateway to overnight a desktop/laptop is wonderful costumer service, unlike HP last one I had took 18 days to get it. -
I can not agree with misconduct since gateway's support altough they are all American, they don't have a clue about the computers. Gateway was an online retailerbut not anymore. Recently they closed their direct online sales and now the only places you can order one are tigerdirect.com, compusa.com, newegg.com, bestbuy.com and bestbuy stores, office depot, officemax, circuitcity. So they became a retail store brand. They don't have their own brands but they are selling their computers via most common retail stores. All of their systems are at a great price level compared to their peer group.

Well its like everything else, I use to work tech support for a 3rd party company that handled microsoft, gateway and aol back in the days when tech support was in america. Honestly I don't think it changed, anyone who can speak "english" in india can get hired, anyone with knowledge of how to even turn on a "PC" would be a team leader. Wouldn't suprise me since it was no different here in the US, I worked in the AOL division and was a team leader 4 months after joining, I had people assigned to me that never turned on a PC before - yet were hired for tech support for AOL. Explains why their customer service is down right horrible.
How is Gateway still selling laptops? Didn't they bankrupt few years ago?
