Hi, Im new to the laptop scene and have never purchased one. I want to buy a gateway 6860FX but I want it to play the latest games for at least 3-4 years from now. Will it be obsolete by then, I hope not because this is the most amazing deal Ive ever heard.
-
sry to break it to you, but i doubt you will be able to find any laptop that will be able to play the "latest games for at least 3-4 years" without any upgrades. Technology is just moving too fast for that.
-
I think the 8800M GTS would be the way to go is you are gaming center. A simple CPU upgrade on the laptop and you will have a machine that will definitely do 2 years. The 7x series high end still can play many of the games today, so you should be ok for a bit. I agree with Lakjin, you will need to upgrade, tweak, and settle if you want last for a couple years and yes, some of the latest games will require the latest tech, just as with everything in life.
-
Its already obsolete. The second you buy a computer, its obsolete. Its sort of like a new car . . .
-

I understand. I bought my laptop, then six months later it dropped from $2.5k to $1k...If you had to buy a laptop in a budget scenario, the 8800M GTS is it. If you want to wait or upgrade, then either wait for Q3/4 or buy a Sager.

It would be the smartest purchase as far as time before obsoletion per dollar spent possible on the market today by a large margin
in 3 years it will be gaming just not fast. -

and the 6860 seems to be on sale once a month for 1249.00. *LOL* -
the desktop GT280 is coming out, about 4 times faster than 9800 GTX, so 8800m are getting obsolete pretty quick.
-
not really nirvana...as long as they keep making on board video...it will be around for quite some time. it just wont be top of the line anymore....
and it's only about 5-10 percent of the world building and buying for serious gaming, while the rest of he world is corporate/regular user/ low end user/i want the world but am not willing to pay for it user. *LOL*. imho -
welll look at the 7950GTX, it is closing in on two years old, its about a year and a half at this point, was released DEC 2006 and it can still max some of the more mainstream games, obv not crysis, far cry 2, COD4, but this card will be good for 2 years atleast, three is pushing it though.
-
(7950 gtx)so it can't play 1 out of 1200 games at max settings...pretty much seems like that card isn't going anywhere either. (speculation on 1 out of 1200+ games)
-
how long has 7950GTX been out btw?
-
Date of Announcement - 12.10.2006
officially available in Q1 2007 i believe -
yea i think us 8800m GTS owners got about 2years still doing semi well in games. nothing to worry about, and considerign I did not spend alot on this laptop we all got a hell of a deal.

Seanno, you have a good point, but in 3 to 4 years a current gaming system will be able to play most games, game designers take that into account when developing their software. Case and point, Everquest 2 came out over three years ago and no system at that time could play it on the very high settings, now any new system can. While the games in the future may not ran on the highest settings, they should still be playable.

i spent just under 2600.00 for what i have in my sig. wooohooo! and she running like a champ. although im like you..i think i got the deal of the century. -
In three to four years all the copper paint will be worn off the keys. The vents will be so clogged up with debris the thing will backfire every time you boot it.
Kidding aside, out of the last 10 computers owned, started with C-64, not one was ready for the latest games..except C-64 after four years. As stated this is the nature of the beast, I find the cutting edge game software always a bit ahead of the hardware.
These are tools and they get worn out, no? -
I bought the 6860FX instead of a Dell model that I was looking, and the main reason was "future-proofing".
This notebook offers a better upgrade path. The P6860fx has a better GPU and weaker CPU, versus the Dell XPS m1530. But the CPU can be easily upgraded now or in a year or two when newer games are out that demand more from the CPU. Upgrading the video card on the Dell is not an option.
So even though I wanted a smaller and lighter notebook like the Dell XPS m1530, I went with this one because this should last longer before I need to upgrade, and has an easier upgrade path when I decide its time.
ALL computers will obsolete. Desktops have the advantage that most things are upgradable. That's not the case with notebooks where some things are soldered onto the motherboard, and motherboards have fewer options for expandability. The PC in my sig that has the Pentium D930 that I turned into an Ubuntu computer was what I built 2 years ago (before Core2Duo's came out) using the latest & greatest parts. That 2 year old computer sure looks obsolete by today's standards, does it? lol
(my 2 cents) -
You can upgrade the CPU to delay buying a new laptop
How long until 6860FX becomes obsolete?
