Now that I've finally cracked open the case to my beloved new Gateway, first thing I did was to create recovery DVD's since I know I'll start over from scratch.
That being said, my DVD drive is VERY LOUD. It vibrates like crazy. If I put finger pressure on one side of the DVD door it quiets down quite a bit. Anyone else have this issue? Is it worth exchanging it? I just don't want to deal with that hassle if I can help it.

Its as loud as my t61p, perhaps the problem is with your disks.

Mine seems pretty quiet. Only installed wow from scratch (8 disks).

seems some media gets very loud, when it does it is by far the loudest part in my notebook.
-
When I mean loud, I mean very loud. I'll try to make it happen again and catch it on video/audio. It's not just the whirring but its like the whole drive and surrounding components vibrate.

That isn't normal. My Vostro is as quiet as a kitten as was my five year old Sony Vaio.

Did you try re-seating the drive? It's one phillips screw on the bottom under a rubber plug. With power off, pop plug out, remove screw, push on tab with screwdriver to force the drive out, then firmly push it back in replace and tighten the screw.
Also maybe just alignment in bay, you could try ejecting tray fully extend it then see if jently moving the tray sideways right and left actually moves the entire drive slightly. -
Seems that if I close the drive by pushing on the side closest to the edge, it makes the noise. Close it by pushihng on the other side, it is more quiet. Still loud by other standards, but livable nevertheless.
