I did this about a year ago but wonder how many there still are out there still coming here. Mine is a converted to P79xx. It would be nice if even the normal lurkers could vote and post as well..........

I check the forum every once and awhile, especially when I'm doing something to my laptop. Love this forum for the resources it provides, so naturally I check it more often when I want to work on or have an issue with the laptop. Just installed an SSD tonight!

P7805u still going strong!
Just did a full take-apart cleaning last week, so the temps are stable in this super hot summer!
-
Yep I still visit every now and then, still use my P7805u for everything, been over 3 years usage now, Best bargin of the century I ever got
-
Good to see we still have a few healthy systems out there. Also, while small, the comunity lives as well.................
-
Still running my P7801 for work and play... only gets turned of when I sleep. Just put in a T9900 cpu and 256GB Solid State drive + 750GB drive for storage. Love the machine, and it has not let me down.
-
6860 here!
-
I'm still with you. I monitor this with a reader subscription. My FX7811 is still working flawlessly, one of the best investments I've made. It took on new life with an SSD addition. It also spoiled me because when it dies, I will need to find another 17 inch 1920 model.
Thanks Tan for holding down the fort. -
Looks like so far the P78xx users are the most prevelant. It kind of suprises me there are no original P79xx's floating around here. Nor have we heard from any P171 FX users..................
-
7805u still going strong! May upgrade to SSD soon, but still runs like a champ!
-
Yup, 7805u. Just rebuilt her, you know all the details.
Running smooth, even better since installing TS. -

Still got a 7805u that my wife uses everyday. Not a single issue in three years.
-
I sold my 7811, but have since been given a bricked 7805 that I'll soon send out for component level mobo repair. I miss the 1920x1200 more than I thought I would.

7801u reporting in.

-
Yes. if any existed and cost less than $200

Actually if you go P79 it is a drop in. It has better power handling capabilties and better GPU. Also quads are no longer out of the question. With the AMD patch for Win7 you loose alot less per CPU cycle over the C2D with a quad. With Win8 you loose nothing per clock.
Because of the power handling overclocking a x9100 or extreme Quad is much better. Beware though of using razer mice as high poll rates on the USB is a known issue with P79 systems...................

Ah now look what you made me do! Bought this Gateway P-7908u FX MB.WEU01.001 MBWEU01001 Motherboard | eBay
The best part is, if I ever try to sell the laptop, I'll get less for it than what I'm putting into it....
and....
I don't even know if the screen works or not. Previous owner said it was crapping out on him. However I don't know if it was the gfx on the blown mobo, or just a bad cable or inverter, but we'll soon see. If it is the screen thats another $100....
So if I plan to use this for Sins of a Solar Empire (runs best on single core), should I go x9100 or qx9200.

Advice appreciated. A LOT.
And lest this be off topic, yes I plan to vote in the poll when the P7805u/79xx is up and running.
edit: I already have Targus 180w, so power should be fine -
7811fx passing by
cheers ... -
For gaming the x9100, for multithread productivity the q9200........................

There are so many times I would like to upgrade to a 79 board, just because it can be done. It is a compulsion thing. Then it hits me, as the cost would be approx 250 dollars for a 3 to 4 year old machine. lol. I applaude those that have made the change, pushing the limit. X9100, bluetooth module, bluray drive, and 8gb ram have been the extent of my mods to date. In the end all I can say is, this old 7811 has been a great machine and it is a damn shame that Gateway dropped the series. One of these days I might even break the RAID buy an SSD and upgrade it to 7.
-
Mine's dead already.
-
Still here and it still runs fine.
-
Seems so far that the P78's are the vast majority....................
-
I have P78xxFX, dont' know the exact model# but its still rocking back and forth, having a few issues with the laptop, but if i just get this GATEWAY P-7901H P-7908U LAPTOP MOTHERBOARD MB.WEU01.001 | eBay is it just drop and play? just remove the X9000, RAM, SSD, wifi card and drop those in the new one and we are good to go? or would i need to get new heat-sinks and all that other stuff? I don't want to spend more than $300 on a new laptop as there is nothing that is 17" with 16:10 Ratio that is cheap and fast. dumping $250 on new Motherboard and using old parts is much cheaper route then getting another laptop. and plus that ebay seller is here locally, maybe i can pick it up in person and save $$$ on shipping
-
x9000 in a P78xx. Was this original? The sandard is 1066 bus not 800 for the CPU is why I ask................
-
no it came with P8400 and i had unlocked X9000 laying around so i put that in and its been in there for past 3 years. i've take it it upto 3.4Ghz with Throttlestop before.
-
Ah, I was getting confused....................
-
Yep, still rocking out with my ole P7811FX
Only thing different at the moment, is upgraded to 8gb memory -
Wow, nice to see we are at over 2 dozen FX systems..................
-
Voted from my 7805u converted to 7908u! It lives! Just needs a ccfl backlight which I ordered on eBay for $5!
-
hi guys, this is off topic, but i did not want to create a new thread for it.
What kind of Connector Interface for WiFi card dose FX7811 have? can we just drop in bigfoot killer wireless-n 1103 that comes with Connector Interface Half-Mini PCIe 1.1 without a problem? what do we have? I'm thinking about buying one but do not want to spend $50+ on a card that might give me trouble and not work. -
it has both half and full sizes
-
Correct as micman stated, it has mini pci-e in both half and full, butttttt if using the half the Fn key combo does not work to turn the card off and on. I cannot remember if the physical wireless switch works either and the half slot just uses the card as always "on".
Oh and micman congrats on your upgrade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Reviving my P79 with gtx260m. Where's the best place to download the latest drivers for my gpu?
-
The stock drivers from nVidia seem to work fine...................
-
Stock drivers from nvidia don't want to install... Got drivers from GeForce.com and works perfectly
-
I run 301.42 with no issues..............

From time to time. Still running my 9C.10(?) bios with an undervolted GPU. Don't play many games on it anymore, but my 7811 is my primary "desktop" for 8 months out of the year.
-
Nice undervolt................

Damn my P7805U still running strong. =)

7805u Reportin In.
-
Over 30 systems just visiting here, guess there are still quite a few out there.............
-
Another p7805u here.
I can't say it has never let me down, but i can't say i have never let it down either.
All in all I have to agree this laptop has been a bargain, on multiple levels for me.
Under warranty i have had 1 full laptop replacement 1week after purchase 2009, another motherboard replacement (2010) and most recently the Best Buy warranty completely refunded the cost of the laptop , less than 1 month from date of warranty expiry (June 2012). How rad is that.
In the past year i have upgraded the laptop to 8GB DDR3 PC3-10600, 1920 x 1200 screen, Intel T9900 cpu and a 180G Intel SSD. I'm somewhat happy with the results, but i dont seem to be getting the results most everybody else brags about.
My system is currently running extremely hot while gaming League of Legends on High sets, Very High sets are playable but with choppy results after 5-10 mins.
I am also experiencing a shutter (freeze and audible noise) in all video play for a while now. This last for about .5secs, and happens randomly, at least i can't seem to find a pattern or link it to any event. This error has now progressed to back to back shutters, 0.5secs long each 0.25secs apart. I would say this happens every 20mins on average, however can be as long as 40 mins maybe. -
God to hear your system still lives. As far as the stutter it could be the GPU overheating. It will downclock itself to stay cool then once cool place the clocks back up. This will also case the memory to shift in and out of 3D performance mode causing further lock up and stutter issues. ..............

Been sooooo long
Miss my 6860FX
-
Still have my 686FX, and it is running strong. But it is now delegated to back up status after 4 years of glorious service. I recently picked up an MSI GT70 a couple months ago and that is my primary system now.
How many FX system still visit this site (Poll)
