The only differences I see are the processor, the slot load dvd burner and the fingerprint reader.

Right now, I don't know what I should do. I have ordered already the P-171S FX for $1600.00 shipped with the 3 year in house warranty (including shipping and handling). I like the fact that it has a slot load dvd burner because I believe it will work will with laptop cause I have one for my PS3 and I think they are great!

How much more performance would I get with the P-171S FX? How much better is the CPU?

Right now I'm on the fence to just cancel my order and pick the P-6831 FX up at Best Buy.

    What do you guys think?

The gateway online model has the much beefier T7250 processor vs the Bestbuy model has the T5450 which is 1.67ghz.

So, for $300, you get Slot load DVD, better processor, 3 year warranty and the fingerprint reader.

Worth it in my opinion for the warranty.

I am right there with you, I paid $1500 shipped with tax and with no waranty. I can save about $250 and pick up the best buy, or wait 3 more weeks and go with the 171sfx..The Cpu is certaintly better and the fingerprint reader and slot dvd are nice asthetic additions...not sure what to do either..I emaield my rep with my concerns to see if I can get it cheaper, or have something thrown on to make it worth the wait and price increase...

Yup, those are the only difference. If you feel difference of $400, including free game from BB FX, is worth it then.

Question...since the processor is 800mhz FSB, would I be able to DDR2 800?

I always get confused with memory

No, DDR2 800 mhz on the Santa Rosa platform will get downclocked to 667Mhz. you can use it but you would see no benefit.

ahh ok...so the CPU FSB has nothing to do with memory speed?

I would say, and I could be wrong that memory speed does affect proessor FSB, if it is not enough. If it is too much, it will get downclocked.

If you plan to upgrade the prosessor at some time that has 800Mhz FSB, then go ahead and get the 800Mhz DDR memory.

If I am wrong, someone let me know. Until a week ago when I started looking for a new notebook. I knew little more than I did 15 years ago. Now my head is literally going to pop with all the information that I won't have to think about for another 5 years. I always bought more than I needed so that I would not have to worry about firguring it out. This time I will be an edcuated consumer.

1199 With free game reduce price to lets say 1150 Then u get the penryn processor Which is alot better. Would be about 1475 and u can use the 125 for the slot load if u cares too Much. In my opinion the best buy one is alot better. but if u could get the one with the 8300 penryn to 1600 even u could get 9300 penryn then the 8300penryn is worth better. BB one is better.

    hhmm...ur forgetting the tax...its 10% here..so add another $100 to that.

If someone can get the other one at $1500 shipped WITH 3 year warranty...i say thats the BEST deal then.

and doesnt that one have a better screen too??

A couple of guys have pulled and replaced their ram with faster 800Mhz DDR. The theory is the chipset down clocks to 667 but you gain better latency or shorter wait time for the processor. What this means in real world results is anybody's guess or what they may read somewhere else.

Me, I'll pass, but would love to pick up an old worthless 2 gig stick of pulled ram for the right price ;)

Hydra, are you looking for a 2gig stick to match the one in your GW, if so, I found eWIZ has one matching the one in my laptop. http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=D2-6SO2GS
