Ummm - I'm not 100% certain on Gateway models, but this seems to be very much the same as my T-1616. If so, I've managed to get 4gb working in my machine. Works great.
I ended up with transcend DDR2 667 2GB chips times two. You have to set the integrated graphics share memory to either 256 or auto. 128 just doesn't boot for some reason!
While you are at it, I would recommend dumping 64-bit vista on it as well - makes A HUGE difference, the 64-bit kernel is significantly better - even with the standard ram!

    Have fun!

Oh - btw - you actually do need 64-bit vista to utilize all of your ram! x86 (32-bit) just doesn't mathematically support that size memory!

no - if you have a valid vista key, it applies to 64-bit as far i am aware...

Since my key is good for 64-bit, is it legal for me to download it? Will I have to reinstall everything all over?

LOL.... I suppose that is a very grey area! I'm not going to answer that - use your own judgement. I personally used a install CD from work and used the key that was on my notebook!

And yes - you will have to reinstall everything!

From what it is sounding like you are not too comfortable with tinkering. By installing 64-bit vista you will be wiping your system clean and starting from scratch... this means EVERYTHING goes. So make sure you backup onto a portable drive/dvd/external storage, etc...

Hmm...maybe I'll use that tool that makes a complete backup of what you currently have. So, just to be clear, 64 bit will allow for full 4 GB support?
