Has anyone succeeded to run their Gateway FX at minimum levels enough to browse the internet, run word and watch a movie without the fan pulsing on and off or constantly? If so, post your settings.

My settings are in my signature and the lowest temperature I can get is 32C (CPU) and 48C (GPU) with everything set at battery using Throttlestop and Windows set to Power Saver. I still can't manage to shut the fan up so it's quite distracting to have my laptop out in the open in a quiet setting.

No. For some reason it's programmed in to turn the fan off at a certain threshold and then just let it get hot until the cycle can repeat.

well you only have 3 options to choose from if you cant ignore it.
    1. browse in a freezer
    2. turn on something in your room that makes some ambient noise
    3. wear headphones

the only way to keep if from pulsing seems to be if you reduce the cpu and gpu heat down. i can get it to pulse rarely when i put it on my cooler but i also have my cpu and gpu undervolted.

normally i just ignore it as i can tune almost anything out (thank you english teachers for forcing me to learn this) I will still wear headphones though.

Have you tried disabling all visual enhancements, basically going back to the old Windows 98 style desktop? Get rid of all the 3d, transparent, glitz and glam and maybe it'll stay under threshold? I don't know. Just a suggestion. Also, do one thing at a time, internet, then word, then movie, not all 3 at the same time. Regardless of what you do, watching a movie will probably kick the fan on even if only for a little while.

If you switch to the 9C.23/9C.20 BIOS, the pulsing will be gone, however the GPU fan won't kick in until the temp is 80C, which is pretty hot.

What I recommend either way is getting PowerMizer Manager to lock your GPU into the lowest power profile. I found that when using the internet, our GPUs will clock up to full frequently. Unlike the PowerMizer switch, you can change the settings without a reboot.

Also, a laptop cooler will go a long way to keeping that fan quiet/GPU cool.

Thanks for the Powermizer suggestion. My laptop is much cooler. Instead of seeing GPU temperatures jumping from 48C to 58C or even 60C for just light browsing and word documents, the temperature has been at 49C using Powermizer.

Do you recommend updating the bios to 9C.23? I'm currently using 9C.17, which still suffers from the pulsing fan effect.

Good to hear. 9C.23 will definitely eliminate the pulsing effect. The only issue is that the GPU could potentially idle at up to 79C without the fan turning on like on a hot day. You would notice that the metal trim and the plastic where your right palm goes (the hard drive) would be quite warm. If you use 9C.23 I recommend at least raising the back of the computer for improved cooling.

Now with Throttlestop, as great as it is, with my experience the power saver feature doesn't really do . The problem with it is that whenever you do anything, the clock speed/voltage will jump up to what you have it set at. I use Throttlestop to lock my multiplier at 8.5, voltage at .9125V on AC and multiplier at 7.5, voltage at .875V battery. If you weren't using it to undervolt then I think you would be better off just with Windows in Power Saver. I do recommend undervolting though because it definitely makes a big difference, especially with CPU intensive stuff, including Flash and what not on the internet.

How did you manage to get your VID settings lower than 0.9750? I can't go any lower for some reason.

Your recommendations have really helped me. My notebook's temps are locked on 30C (CPU) when underclocked.

    +1 Rep.

Update: 9c.23 turns off the GPU fan and the GPU starts idling at 75C. Reverted back to 9c.17.
