    Noob question:
I have the p7805u, and it has an esata port. i have never used it, anyway so i bought an esata to sata cable and tried plugging it into an internal laptop hd....nothing happened.

does it need an external enclosure for it to work or?

    thanks in advance :)

Don't you need a Esata enabled external hard drive for that to work?

how are you powering the Hard Drive?

E-SATA doesnt provide power so with out an external power source the drive isnt going to actually be able to do anything

Yeah get an E-SATA enclousure and they will either come with a normal wall plug (for larger 3.5in drives) or another USB port that will supply the power to the unit.

I cant remember what brand mine is but I actually bought it at Best Buy and it supports USB interface and E-SATA (with USB power).
I want to say it came in a red box, but I just cant remember the brand. But its a nice enclosure, solid aluminum and a pretty sturdy controller board

I`ve bought a Sansung hd, 1,5 and wanted to boot with it, as an external bootable hd, so I bough an e-sata enclosure.

The problem is that windows hardly sees it, I have to reboot many times an once in while, I can boot with it.

    I`m using win 7 64.

'Does anybody knows how to fix it?

If you are trying to boot from it you need to go into your BIOS and set it as the boot disc... though hot having my FX in front of me i'm not sure if its a valid choice or not.

Tks for the reply, but that is not the problem.

When I turn the laptop on, there is screem for the OS to choose, the hd inside it or the external hd.

The problem is if I choose the external, with the e-sata, most of the times it wont boot, as if it were not conected.

any help on this matter is more than welcome.

hrm... are you using a linux install as your second OS? If so you might want to edit the line in GRUB that give the amount of time you have before your choice becomes final.

It might just be that the drive needs more time to mount properly and be useable.

Though honestly with that answer i'm basically grasping at straws, i'm not sure exactly how the protocal of mounting the ESATA drives work.
