I'm trying to open ntune and no matter what I do it won't open. I just downloaded the latest version from NVidia and when I click on "performance" from either the start menu or the control panel it always opens the NVidia control panel on the 3D options setting. All of my firewalls are off. Has anyone ever had this problem?

uninstall the old one and install this it has finally solved all and i mean all my problems my laptop was shutting down anytime i overclocked and other similar problems your having
that is if you dont already have this version other wise just uninstall and reinstall you may want to reboot inbetween even though you dont have to with ntune.

Thankya much. I'll try it out. By the way, does anybody know the gateway FX pll, or at least where to find it? I found a guide but I opened up the main comparment on the computer and the only thing that looked even slightly like it turned out to be Taimag ethernet hardware... help?

Are you talking about the Phase Lock?

Heres the complete spec of our chip set
    download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/31627303.pdf

Look on Page 136 on AM5 and AM7
    also
    Page 137 on B42, C42, H47, H48, K44, K45

That should be all the frequency controllers...at least all of them i could find on the Diagram. I would have to crack the machine open to get any more detailed than that...and i'm not that brave yet.

What's the lowest I can downclock my 8800 to? Is there a certain point beyond which it becomes damaged? How should I be able to tell when to let up?

Well i have nothing to do tomorrow, so i'll give it a go... as its going to take a lot of time. I just tried to remove the bottom plate and its the weirdest piece of plastic ever. The Orange band is actually attached to it (instead of the top like i thought) and i think I'm going to have to remove the screen and keyboard before i can actually remove the bottom because after you get to the back (near the battery) 1/4 of the plate it no longer prys off like the rest. This is going to be an all day job i feel.

All i have to say is if i can accomplish this and some how not completely slag this rig you had better all give me rep for along long time :p

    @Danja
Why are you trying to downclock your GPU?
I think i've seen someone say one of the Drivers they have actually down clocks their 8800 to 200/300 when their not doing anything thats not 3D so i'm pretty sure you can get those numbers. But I'm not sure. I have a weird card so i cant even find out for you. If i go above 515/850 my card goes ape s*** so i havent even tried to down clock it for fear it will just give up. So i'm sticking with stock settings pretty much.

and yes the nvidia drivers down clock the gpu when 3D is not used down to 200/100 (core/mem)

Well, I sent them an email so I'll let you guys know if they tell me anything useful.

I tried to overclock at 550/850/1450 and my 3dmark06 score fell from 7*** to 5****. I'm using the 177.41 drivers. Are those bad for overclocking? I desperately want to push my closeup Lock On FPS to >15... that seems to be my limit for "smooth" gameplay. They're at about 9-12 right now. Does anyone have any suggestions?

i havent even touched the shader clock yet but im running 600/900 and dont seem to be having any problems my 3dmark scores with that speed is 8873 or around there and thats at 1280x1024 cause i got a wuxga screen in mine now.
    oh and a t9300 CPU.

Weird. I don't really care that my score is lower than yours; I'm running the free version which only runs in its own resolution while my native is 1900x1200. I do care very much that my score fell by about 2000 points when overclocking. I'll see if cutting back on shader helps.

the free version runs at 1280x1024 if you have a monitor that supports it which it seems you do so not sure whats up with that.

Well, I tried the same OC before but with the shader clock kept at standard and I got 4800. Argh. Why won't my laptop OC?

Also, does anyone know how to disable the NVidia prompt asking if I'd like to load the current settings on startup? It doesn't ask me until after I start my benchmark, and then it keeps asking me so that by the end of PCMark06 I have 12 NVidia popups in the background!

Edit: Maybe it's not a problem with the OC... I just ran it on stock again and it gave me 4785. Is this normal for a 8800GTS?

well the reason your marks went down in the first place is because it down clocked it self (guessing).
run gpuz (sensor tab marked to continue in background)in the background of your 3dmark then you can see wether it down clocks or not.

dont need to run the whole loop, one test will suffice.

lol i've seen that ntune **** happening

How can you run GPU-Z on top of 3dMark? I'm assuming that's the only way to get accurate readings... wouldn't it change in between tests when you can see the desktop?

not on top. but not minimized.
you will be able to see it between tests and the graph will tell where you are at. i had same problem long time ago, cant say with which driver version.
    anyway try it.

normally it doesnt downclock that fast (30 sec cpu idle).
so you should see your ntune values in the graph.

Wow you're right! It was at 383/301 mHz between every test except for the cpu test where it idled at 200/150 or something. I'm using the 177.41 driver that everyone on this forum recommends... should I use something else?

Excellent, thank you very much! I'm back at 7495 at stock settings... probably would be higher if I disabled all of my background tasks while it was doing my cpu benchmark. Now to see if I can overclock without having ntune crash on me!

    youre more than welcome .
just keep track of your temps while gaming.
keep hwmonitor in background so you know what your gpu went through while you were slashing shooting whatever ;)
