Yes but the problem was ntfs4dos write capable was and maybe still is not free until ((Avira offering)). Using cr*cked does open one's horizons. Legally free is my first choice when possible.<------ that's what that meant

my bad, the avira offering through me off.

LOL, we have to read the fine print.

Some of these things should not be tried at home. :p

There are several ways to get the same result and we all have our favorites. I often take the long way around because of my coveted amateur standing.

Sounds like Superfetch doing it's thing. Especially since you just did an OS reinstall. Give it a couple of days to learn your habits and build its cache and you *should* be ok. You could always disable it if it really bothers you, but again, it should settle down shortly.

John did you disable your ftp access? I'm stealing the usb floppy from my work laptop and wanted to get that disk ready to go from here. It is rejecting the credentials.

So I have another question. Using a 1.44MB floppy that already has a 1MB bios image on it does the program save the backup bios somewhere else?

When the wincris application prompts me to format the disk, do I need to select the "copy dos crap" box? If so this won't leave me with enough room to copy the bios to the disk

bleh, booted into recovery mode with my floppy drive. Got about 30 beeps then nothing. Even went and walked the dog to ensure I was waiting long enough. 20 min later still a black screen with no activity whatsoever. Gonna try the bootable cd method next.

and you cant save a copy of the bios on the floppy because there is no room.
and we are trying to get it do a bios backup under dos, but to no avail as of yet. and that is really dam.n weird!!
    phlash16 /bu /s /x

that should do the backup, but so far...it aint working for me...any one else having any luck under dos??

Wonder if we can ask mistargill to do another back up using a different method .

If you have any ideas for him maybe you could throw them his way . I would ask him but im not well versed in creating or backing up my bios`s.

Oh ya i just bought crysis warhead its installing now and looks awsome from the packaging.

Well I just spent an hour with every boot disk, cd boot disk, the ultimate cd boot disk, and bootable usb flash method I could think of. I can reliably get phlash16 to run and can even get it to pretend to back my bios up (it eventually freezes) but no way no how can I get it to even attempt to flash that bios.

We either need a new version of phlash that works with our gear or we need a proper bios file.

@johnksss: so about that 94.29.00 gateway bios file. can i just throw it on my usb (flash drive) boot and it'll take or do i have to create an autoexec.bat for it? if so, what do i need to write into the file?

    here's to hoping then.

on a side note...the flash drive is set up for a bios update, but it was the files from the 94.28.00 'update' that are on the drive. does that make a difference?

So for us 7811 users... the current conclusion is there is no way to flash to the new bios unless we can get it in a different form than what's posted?

replace old bios file with 94.29
make what ever changes you need to point it to load that file.
this file will load in bios recovery or normal flashing mode. (i did it both ways)

till we verify with another copy of the bios. you are probably right.

    alright, i edited the autoexec.bat to say ' phlash16 /s /x /mode=3 bios-94-29.wph ' and it came up with a 'can not load' error.

are there any other files i need to edit?

your disk should look like this
    1:minidos.sys
    2:autoexec.bat (phlash16 /s /x /mode=3 bios-94-29.wph)(if not in recovery mode)
3: bios-94-28.wph (if in recovery mode it needs to be bios.wph)

    nah... that's cool too.

    just rename the file bios.wph
and edit autoexec.bat to read the same thing and try that, if you havent already.

edit: mine is exactly as this is but with everything pointing to bios.wph. i just did it right now and worked fine.

cool!.. you had me worried there for a bit..that's why i went back to check my work. :D

now if your going to leave that flash as it is...edit the autoexec.bat file to look like this
    hlash16 /s /x /mode=3 bios.WPH

so that you dont make a mistake and leave that flash inserted into something.

all i was going to do was move those files into a folder on the drive, so i would still be able to use the flash drive for other things.

and if i ever needed to use the bios stuff again, i could just move the files from the folder (deleting the other things on the drive) to the root of the flash drive, right?

you could do that, but dont have too. most of them files are invisible.
you can delete choice. not sure why they had it. you could rename autoexec.bat

you can still use the flash for what ever...that's what i do, but since they had a sale on 2 gig's i got a few of them. one for each laptop. just to be safe later.lol

edit: if you add the ntfs4dos you can boot, read & write ntfs partitions.
