So i was messing around with the thermal pads and i got them on right finally.
Anyways, I put them on the CPU and the chipset, and when i bolted everything on it wouldnt start. Well, it would, but it starts for s econd and then shuts off. I confirmed it is not the CPU, RAM, or HDD that is causing the problem. Any ideas? to me its like somehting is shorting out..
-
Did you connect everything there was to be connected ? (I guess you may have already checked all that)
CPU screw tightened, Memory seated properly....? -
-
Dont put the thermal pad on the CPU . i had a similar problem with my 6860 when i didnt have the heatsink bolted down properly it would start for 5 seconds then shut off.
-
Maybe the chipset misses the aluminum foil? But, the CPU not being locked was my issue as well
-
I iwll double check everything again, just didnt understand. -
thermal pad on the cpu ?
MURDERER !!! -
-
haha i had no clue that would kill it, these are meant for CPU's so i assumed it would work.

Have you been able to revive your 6831 yet?
If not i say go back to the aluminium foil... that seemed to be working pretty well. If not maybe replace it with copper or silver foil for even better heat transfer -
yeah im sure the silver foil would be cheap aha.
Yea i think im gunna just take that themral sh it off, but its like gum, its gunna be a bi tch getting it off. -
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
Well its not exactly cheap, but the last time i purchases silver foil it was like 30 dollars for a 4in x 4in x .025mm sheet
http://www.sciencelab.com/page/S/PVAR/23044/SLS4222
but apparently it has gon up in price ALOT
Though if you want bling you can go fot the gold foil
http://www.sciencelab.com/page/S/PVAR/23044/SLG1948
or for pure rap star making others hate on you bling effect
i present you platinum
http://www.sciencelab.com/page/S/PVAR/23044/SLP2380
So i guess silver is out now... man when did the markets go so high. I wouldnt have even mentioned silver if i knew it was 1000 times the price i last bought it. -
something is fried....cause it wont start now., and i redid everything, aluminum, AS 5, etc. no thermal pads. I will take a pic for you guys in a minute.
-
Swap the stock cpu back in if you have it, that'll help you eliminate the CPU from the equation.
-
ive swapped everything, im taking into a local laptop repair shop and if they cannot figure it out Im sending it in to gateway....
-
Try starting it with the battery. Maybe your adapter died?
-
ok so i just heard from the shop, they said a couple of chips are blown and it will have to be sent to gateway.
-
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
dang that sucks man, i hope you can get it up and running again. Sounds like mobo replacement time.
Maje sure to take all of your aftermarket bits and bobs out before sending it to gateway lest they "accidently" take them.
I hope it all gets worked out for you -
how has everyones experience been with them? Im assuming this is not covered under warranty? i think i could get away with it, power surged or something?
and **** this is going to be expensive. i hope they can just replace the chips, i havent talked to the store owner yet, he just said some chips were blown but we dont know what ones. -

If it was a powersurge it should be able to be warrentied (unless they are total gits about it)
I would go with the... "i dont know what happened it just didnt work all of the sudden"
See where that takes you.
As to their service... not sure the only one on the forums that i can remember ever sending their notebook to gateway ended up having his hard drives replaced by gateway with out telling him they were going to do it.
A motherboard replacement can be quite expensive though, i would call into gateway and talk prices and warrenty first before making a choice on the matter. If its over a few hundred dollars i would try to find an old 6860/6831 and get that for around 600 and then just replace the stock stuff with your upgrade parts -
yeah i will have to see. efff i didnt need this right now! thanks kamin, i can see it being very expensive though. if the friggin VGA wasnt soldered it would be less. Im thinking I can get away with it though, i still have to talk to the laptop guy i gave it to.
-
That is probably the CPU.. The same thing happened to me when I upgraded to T8300 - my problem was one of the pins was bent.
Sounds like the exact same problem I had, because mine would turn on aswell.. But shut off 5-10 seconds after. -
-
I feel your pain narsnail. I ****ing hate it when **** breaks on you.
-
Its my own fault i should really stop trying to fix things on it. I will probably not be touching it after this aha.
-
What do you think caused the frying?
-
yep go with don't know what happened, just went black one day. shouldn't cost anything but shipping.
-
ok good news!
the chips that measure and direct power are blown, meaning it keeps throwing it into a loop and trying to protect itself, but can be replaced so I was told. Its only you know, $100 instead of close to a grand for a new MB. His tech guy is away so he cannot fix it now, so im going to see if this is something i could do myself, but most likely am going to take it somewhere ot have it done. -
man with your history, outsource it
-
thanks for the vote of cofidence royk, i know who not to take as my running partner when i vouch for world domination!
you will burn witch!
on the upside i know it can be fixed....ugghgh im sooo happy -
yeah right i will saddle up with a Canadian suffering from a witch hunt complex on a world domination tour. totally make sense
-
o dear that made me laugh ahah
I think my 6831 died...
