Right now I have a 7805u 1200p Edition. Other than that stock. And Im not sure its enough performance. So I was thinking about switching to a m17x. So I was woundering about this and decided to get some input from people within the community.
Biggest reason Im thinking about getting rid of this is because the GPU just doesnt have the performance I would like. I would like to get a system where I dont have to sacrifice as much graphics to maintain performance and frame rate. Also with more and more games being designed for quad core (Resident Evil 5) I think its getting to be time to pick up something Quad Core.

I wouldn't want to drop about 3 grand on a gaming machine. I did that once with Alienware and didn't get much use out of it. They are nice computers but over priced. Yes SLI GPU's are sweet but want game can't run on this computer? I just upgraded my CPU and I am happy with the performance that i get out of the computer for half the cost of Alienware. IMO
-
Well I would really want Quad Core, It seems like thats where cames these days are going. Ive heard mixed input on how the 05 can or cant use quad core.. and the fact that the GPUs arnt upgradable or replaceable doesnt help us long run.
-
.
-
If anything get the i7 and not the Quad Cores, I would give it a little while and let the price drop on the i7's as they aren't cheap and not very fast for notebooks right now..I think.
-
I think the i7's for laptops right now are pretty sweet, but not necessary.
If you're smart about configuring the M17x, you can get away with a pretty decent price. I considered one but ended up buying my Asus.
But if you go with a quad-core CPU and SLI 260m's, and tinker with everything else, you could probably keep it down close to $2400. I don't think it's ridiculous. It will be a great performer and the build quality is astounding IMO.
If you've got the cash I say go for it. I don't think it's a bad option at all. -
Well if you have money to burn, nothing is stopping you haha... but If you are a poor college student like me, its not worth paying for the premium "name" when you can get much more valuable deals elsewhere... I would check out Sager instead IMO
-
Well.. I dont have boat loads of money right now, infact i only have about $1500 for an alienware.... cant get squat for that. I was debating just upgrading the processor on the 7805u but i want a Quad Core. And I dont think thats possible.
-
-
Gaming doesn't really use quad core right now anyways or so I've heard.
-
Resident Evil 5 is set up for Quad Core, And it seems more and more games are going that way... I mean think about it. games ran on single cores when singles cores were big.. then dual cores came out.. then games were made for dual cores.. now quad cores are out.... get it?
-
The m98nu is still a great machine -
how would i get an extra 13%??
-
Epp discount plus pay with Dell perfered account. It has no intrest for18 months
If you call and order you may be able to get some extra off or a free mouse or bag ... It's pretty common -
I was going to pay like $1500 on the dell perfered account, then the rest in cash. Might be ordering it tomorrow. (Sunday) gonna sleep on it first.
-
Well Im wating for a call back, i gave them hell about the price. So hes working on getting me a 7% discount. I guess they arnt doing the EPP right now.
but here it is so far.

Cut out the random copy and paste.
4 grand for a notebook? Either you're very well off or 12. -
If someone's willing to pay that much for a laptop, they should at least have a nice SSD in there... it makes a huge difference, for me anyway.
-
well the way i looked at it. 4gs is nothing compared to the 60gs i put in mods to my suby. im not 12...lol im almost 22. and the Ssd is already here and waiting
-
This is what you are being quoted:
1 Intel Core2 Extreme Quad QX9300 2.53GHz (12MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
1 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz 2 x 2048MB 1 17.0in, WUXGA,LCD,ANW,M17X
1 CrossFireX - Dual 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870
1 500GB 7,200RPM (xMB Cache) w/ Free Fall Protection
1 Internal 300Mbps Dual-Band a/g/n 2x2 MIMO
430-0628 1 Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR
Shiny rainbow colored keyboard and a little alien head.
That is what you are getting for $3,984.68
What does 1333MHz ram do for you if you don't have an I7 chip?
Seems like insanity to me. You could buy the new FX laptop, a 46 inch 1080p 120hz tv, an xbox 360, a ps3, all the games you are talking about and still have money left over.
SERIOUSLY... -
it helps when overclocking buy really the 1333 is a waste
-
I thought microcenter had some really good deals on these laptops? You can do better. 2k-2.5k yeah you pay for a brand name and some quality stuff. 4k is absurd though.
-
the qx9300 is a waste
upgrade every outside dell
only order the 4870's everything else base and then go to newegg
and the AW is cheaper then a m98nuwith the discounts avaliable
-
-
My biggest deal is im going to purchase the extended warrenty, So i want the best i can get that still is "Stock". because in 13 months i dont want to have to purchase a new mother board or something along those lines.
-
Yeah, I thought about getting a second laptop, Sager w/ i7-975 extreme, SSD, etc.. had it priced out at about $4K ~$4.1k and in the end got the T9900 and Win7 for the 7805u instead. With the wife out of work now for 16 months, it would not be wise for me to make a big purchase like this, who knows whats coming in the next couple of months economywise.
-
I was thinking about buying someones used q9000 out of the m17x and installing it in the 7805u, I thought i saw in someones sig they were running a quad core. But chances are when the alienware comes in ill just sell this anyhow. With the 1920x1200 screen, it should go quickly.

You should watch the debt your racking up... It might come back and bite you in the butt when/if you decide to get married, buy a house, start a family and all.
My brother went on alittle bit of a spending spree in his early 20's as he was still living at home with the parents and holding down 2 decent jobs while going to school part time.
Then he got laid off from one job. Finished school and had trouble finding a career for awhile.
Don't know your life situation just saying be careful.. -
-
To be honest, I feel a few things could/should be shaved off, one being the QX9300, buy the cheapest available on the model and upgrade yourself later, for easily half the price. Is it not a $900 or so premium for that CPU? You can get one from HP for $500, and sell the one you bought with it and make maybe $100 or $200 back, then you only shelled out about $300 or so for the QX9300 if all goes well.
That should bring it around the $3000 range will it not? Also maybe not buying the 1333 DDR3 would be wise. Just my thoughts. -
lol its already ordered. And I understand that I could of saved money. But Keeping the warranty is more important to me. I plan on buying the additional 3 year warranty when my 1 year runs out.
The only think i wish i could change is upgrading to the blu ray burner...lol -

I was thinking about switching to Alienware...
