Just wondering, for those who have played around with it, what would you say are the ideal settings for Call of Duty 4 for performance / graphics? When I shift my resolution to max.. I average about 30fps.. and when I hit optimal settings.. I tend to get about 70-90fps and it still looks good.. but the resolution is fairly low.

Just curious if anyone has figured out the perfect medium?

You can easily enable the highest settings and then lower the AA / AF to have phenomenal frame rates. The IQ difference in AA / AF on a larger resolution is less noticeable on a higher resolution versus a lower, and it also takes causes a larger performance hit. That said, COD4 is an extremely well designed engine that runs great on a variety of hardware, the 7811FX can easily dominate that game ;)

That's what I was thinking as well.. but when I had it set on the max resolution it felt kinda sluggish at some points during the single-player.. especially the wetworks level.

    +1 to lowering AA and AF. i average 45fps @ 1920 x 1080 (when playing on my 32" TV)

How far should I lower that? Just keep default settings.. set it to 1920x1200 (or 1080) and lower AA and AF how far?

set it to your native res (1920x1200), and test out the average fps while lowering AA and AF till you are satisfied with your results.

no problem. i personally set AA and AF as i see no difference with it turned on, unless i am standing still and up close to an object, which for me is very rare in CoD 4. i'm always moving in that game.

I realized with Max settings.. I get a lot higher FPS in MP.. Are graphics dumbed down for MP (makes sense)

it kind of appears that way to me as well, but who knows. i know that CoD4 is a dx9 only game. which our video cards should be able to run quite well.

I'm curious as to what settings you have your CoD4 set to?

Also.. anyone know why everytime I load CoD4 it trys to tell me my hardware has changed and asks if it wants to set it to optimal settings?

Enable console through the settings then hit ` to bring up your console and type "/cg_drawfps 1".. viola.. FPS in the top Right. :p

For some reason COD both 1 and 2, have allways done that and I don't know why. The game also doesn't do very well with auto detection. I had a computer that just could barely play cod4 before, and the game automattically put the setting's too high for me to play on that computer. It looked like a slide show. The game allways tries to default to 800 x600 with low details no matter what computer you have.

autodetections usualy are not that great. its all about knowing where a game will take a performance hit the most and balancing that with the eye candy you want

a couple of the big ones
    Resolution and AA(anti aliasing)
higher resolution will not get the stair case affect on edges like you will at a lower res

    rule of thumb
the higher the res the less AA you will need
the lower the res the more AA you will need

if you run into newer games where you can not run full like you can the older ones then I normally step down the resolution turn up the AA and then full details on textures to bring back the realism. where as some people like to run at native res and turn down the textures and affects. I think this looks worse but its all up to prefrence and the type of game.

I played with it last night.. still haven't found that perfect happy medium. :p The settings in CoD4 don't quite make as much sense as.. Low, Normal, High, Max.. 4x..8x.. etc. Lol

I played it pegged everything and beat it....couple of spots at 20fps but overall 40-50

Yeah just single player right now.. I beat it on 360 but it was such a good experience.. I wanted to see what the 7811 could do.

What does pegged mean anyways? Lol. The stage with WetWorks really pushed the PC to the limits.. It was averaging about 20-30 fps (In red the whole time lol)

i've gotten that message on cod1, 2 and 4. i think to save power, the gpu and cpu are underclocked when not doing anything intensive. 'powersaver' or whatever u wanna call it. on my current comp., when i fire up a graphically intense game, like cod 4 , hl2:ep2 etc, the fans go into overdrive, like a dormant subsystem of the comp. just kicked in. now, when i play an older game like cs 1.6, the fans dont spin so hard. so i just click 'no' to the change settings option.

I know that auto detet is not generally great on most games.but COD is known for having probably the worst. Or worst that I've seen anyways. Most other games that I've tried the autodetect on were far closer to being ideal settings, than the COD games and you allways get that rediculous message saying that your settings have changed. If you don't pay attention and hit yes to that dialog box (as I've done once or twice), it screws all of your settings up. It's the only annoying thing in a game that is otherwise fantastic in every other concievable way.

I got COD as my free game with the laptop.

It has tried to start me on 1280 x 800, 1024 x 768, 800 x 600, and last night for the first time 640 x 480! Whereupon I immediately turned the settings to 1920 x 1200 and response was fine.

I did crash after three hours, though. But I think that's about as much COD as I want to play anyway.

FWIW, COD has crashed me twice before, at lower settings and much quicker. But the 7811 has been rock solid for the two weeks since then except for that one crash last night, and I figure I can live with a crash every three hours.
