I have a Gateway MX3230 Notebook. I would like to install a retail version of Win. XP that I have on it. Would I be able to restore it to the factory XP if I wanted to, or will the install of the retail version stop the restore abilities?
I want to install a retail version because I don't want all of the junk to install with it.

Make restore discs first.

I have restore disks. I just didn't know if it would let me restore if I wanted to at a later date, after installing the retail XP.

It should let you restore it to factory condition but if there is a recovery partition you may want to leave that intact and just do your factory install on the main partition.I deleted the recovery portion of the partition on my Gateway P6831FX and I was not able to recover some of the programs I wanted to keep.I actually found a App Recovery Disc for another Gateway computer that I owned and i was able to pull the apps off of there and install them.

Are there any programs on the P-6831fx that are worth keeping? I know that a recovery disk should be made with the drivers on it. But, other than that, do you recommend to save anything else. I don't have my laptop yet, the Best Buy near me hasn't gotten any in and I have a rain check for it at the $1250 price and a free game. I'm ranting right now because I'm tired of waiting. But, back to what I was saying. Are there any programs that won't be on the fresh install of Vista that are worth keeping?

Nope, except maybe the Labelflash software, if you know, you're into that sort of thing.
