    Hey guys!
I am trying to install Windows xp x64 on a Gateway M-6862 with Vista installed already.

I went into the bios to have it boot to CD, but it doesn't load up. How come it's not working?

Also, is there an option where I can actually see the advance options on the bios?
is there even such a thing for this mobo?

whats funny is that it boots up
but when installing it doesn't let me do it because it couldnt find any drives
when there's several open partitions for it be installed on

It sounds like you're not loading the F6 drivers for the SATA controller. Cardinal mistake when you're loading XP onto a machine that has a newer ATA controller that XP has no chance whatsoever of natively supporting.

    hi vyan,

well to install windows xp ( no matter if 32bit or 64bit) you will need a sata driver ready on your xp installation cd. otherwise you will face the common problem of the "harddrive not beeing available during setup".

this matter has been discussed thousand times here at the board.
since xp64 respectively it´s sp2 is more than one year old it does not have the sata driver in it´s driver database.

you have two options here :

    1. find the right sata driver for your motherboard. you can find the satadrivers for various chipsets over at intel ( your notebook is intel based , is it ? ).
you would need to slipstream the driver to an image( iso) of your installation cd and after you have implemented the driver yourself you would need to burn your iso of the slipstreamed xp onto a cd again.
after that you will have no problems with installing xp (32 or 64). for slipstreaming you would need a little program called NLITE

    2. if your bios does have a sata compatibility you can use this setting in the bios to "switch off" sata features and run your hdd in compatibility mode without the need of slipstreaming the driver.

you may loose a little bit of hdd performance if you opt for solution 2. and i say you may, since nobody i know of ever tested the difference.

    good luck

    hey Schoko! it's you again!

yes it is an intel board

    i ran cpu-z

    chipset: Intel Pm965
    bios-
    Version:91.24

Entering the Bios doesn't give me an option, thus i was hoping there was a control key to active those advance or hidden options like in a Gigabyte mobo

    yeah, me again ;)

    try downloading these files :
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...00&DwnldId=16760&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng

that would be the files that are needed to be slipstreamed.

there are several sata chipsets supported in the iastore.inf, the one you would need to choose when you have pointed n-lite to the drivers folder is : ICH8M-E.

if you don´t want to slipstream and have an usb floppy drive you can put the files in the archive i have linked, onto the floppy disk , insert the floppy and when the xp setup starts you have to press f6 to install additional storage controllers.

thanks for the great help, i will try this!

    check back soon!

what programs do you recommend to make the files into an ISO.
right now the window xp x64 is just in a Folder with all the contents of the cd

^ i think that might be easier since i have a usb floppy disk!
