Using cpuid hardware monitor, I noticed that my 9800m gts hit 105C (221 F).

Is this normal? And is it safe for the laptop?

    Or is it a problem?

    Thanks in advance.

I'd recomend you follow Azricksters guide and redo the TIM on GPU, Northbridge, and CPU. Wasn't that hard and could help your temps. Also, try raising the back of the notebook to give a little more airflow, or a laptop cooler. Also, use another temp monitoring application like Speedfan or Hardware monitor to confirm temps.

That's way beyond the realm of acceptable. Try the Zalman NC-2000 cooler dropped the temps on my ASUS by 10C.

Are you making sure it's well ventilated? If so, that's "defective GPU"-level hot. The 7900GTX on my Gen 2 started getting that hot (100C+) prior to dying.

    Wow are you serious? 105C?

That's the exact opposite of an acceptable temperature. That is GPU is frying levels. You need to find what is causing that and fix it immediately!

Does it only reach that high while gaming?
Are you placing the laptop on a hard flat surface?
Is your fan coming on at all?
When was the last time you cleaned it?
    What are your idle temps?
Are you trying to push some insane overclock?

It reached that high when gaming.
Laptop is on a flat surface
    Yes, the fan comes on.
Didnt clean it, the laptop is 3 days old.
    Idles at 51C
    Not o/cing.

I have no idea what to do at this point, even if i apply thermal paste the temps will be hotter than usual right?

OK... if its 3 days old and brand new then i would just take it back to the store to get a replacement. There is NO way that a new laptop should have that much trouble. If the GPU isnt bad then they more than likely messed up the thermal paste application when they were originally assembling it (which is why i want gateway to redesign these to allow easy access to GPU)

Can you hear the fan picking up RPM from the time you are idling to the time you are gaming?

105c is safe for frying eggs, i'll bet you'd have to go to a burn unit if you touched the thing.

105C is 5C greater than the temperature at which water boil. DAMN!

Those idle temps are normal. So there's something happening that only happens under load. It's possible you have a bad seat on your heat sink but since this is a new laptop, I would definitely return it for another model. You should be able to have the Geek Squad do a free stress test of your new one to make sure the temps are normal because of this.

BUT I contacted gateway and they are sending me a new p7805u free :D

Hopefully this one will be better.

My aforementioned 7900GTX lasted about 2 1/2 weeks when it started pegging super-high temps, and that was with turning it off and not leaving it on.

The gateway technician said that since it has normal temps at idle, there was nothing wrong with it.

Btw....the highest temps my cores in processor hit were 59 and 60...normal compared to gpu right? So maybe its a problem with the thermal compound on the gpu and not cooling system in the laptop.

This in not so, The GPU and CPU have completely separate cooling systems. My GPU idels around 40C so your idle is not normal. If gateway wont do anything for you, you really need to put new thermal compound on their before it dies.

He's completely wrong. My P-7801u idles at 25/28C from a cold start. If on for a long time, it idles at 34C. Under load, it hits a max of 79C.

You have a lemon. You did the right thing by asking for a replacement. Don't mess around with the defective laptop because you wouldn't want the battery to explode or anything else as horrific.

    yep!

That gateway tech should have known better than that.

First you're idling about 10ish degrees warm... and NO GPU should hit 100+ degrees when gaming. I have an older 8800GTS and i can break 82degrees no matter what i'm doing.

I would try to keep talking to them. Different techs will give different answers. Keep at the until you get someone willing to work with you on your issue

High temps on and off could be the TIM is too thin and essentially boiling out. Since it is thin when you turn it off and let it cool the TIM may be slightly recovering the chips as the bubble(s) shrink. This is one of the main benefits of using ICD, no boiling out............

I have in the past stress test three 78xx using Furmark for about 15-20 mins. All of them maxed out around 93-95c. So anything over ~95c is potentially harmful.

I think if its going over 90c you have some cooling issues, I had my system coupled with an x7800, and sharing the same heat sink I never once saw my GPU go over 75c, while your cards are clocked higher than mine was, it should be too much of a difference.

Just because it has normal temps idling doesn't mean 105 C is a normal temp under load
