I saw someone selling a Gateway P-7811 FX is this worth buying used? And what is it's option in game play for the newer games like Diablo III and Left for Dead and other hardcore games? And should I upgrade the CPU beyond getting 8Gigs of Ram? Anyone with a P-7811FX or know more about this laptop could you enlighten me about it and its capabilities and what upgrades can be done? I do have a P-6860FX FYI...upgraded to T9300 and 8Gigs of Ram as well and is still running well haven't gamed on it yet but like to when I am not so busy with work and stuff.

No. Buy a dead gateway NV78 like I did, an MXM motherboard for it and a MXM 3.0 card, for about 400$ it will be much newer and more powerful than the FX series.

Can't speak for the P7811 but under furmark 1280x720 I get 30 FPS, in your link it was only doing 24 FPS, unless you have found better drivers?

They like to sell it for 400US. I don't know if a NV78 will come around as those are far a few between and if your lucky to find a system like that to rebuild especially when this one is in working order. I will have to do a in person inspection of it to see how it work but from what they showed in pictures it up and running.

$400 US is not a bad deal but these do have issues.

1.) since these are the early 9800m cards they only have 512mb memory. The issue may lie in the date the main board was made as the GPU could have remnants of the nvidia solder issue. The 78xx models are a bit of a better choice where there is 1GB video memory. These were put together at a later date and hopefully will avoid the solder issue.

2.) There was a TSZx bug. While this was not too evident with the stock CPU if you went with a T9900 or better the TSZ sensor could lock at 99C, not that it was this hot it just locked there, and this by default casues the CPU to downclock to compensate. Undervolting and/or Throttle stop will help this issue.

3.) there is a guy on ebay selling a P-7808 with original Q9000. The problem here is you have to undervolt or under even light load the cpu will declock itself to cool down. Also a quad core in single or dual thread is slower clock for clock than a C2D and a Q9000 is only 2.0 GHz. The P7808 is the 1GB 9800m but I think it is only 1440x900 resolution.

I watched 2 P-7915u's (one with WUXGA and one just WXGA) go for under $500 on ebay...

Im not saying they arent worth more... just $400 seems kind of pushing it

7915 WUXGA is well worth it, the WXGA not so much unless you actually want the lower res for native gaming at that res for the better frame rates........

if you were to purchase a P79xx it is a much better choice. The video is 10% faster than even an overclocked 9800m. Overclock the 260m for even more. A true 79xx will already have the better GPU fan and most likely have the revision 2 HS which is capable of higher TDP. With a P79xx you also have the choice to put in a quad core if you really need the multi thread crunching power. The P79 board has much more amperage available to the CPU was was evident going from my P7805 to P79xx as I had to substantially lower the vcore with the x9100. Just remember the added on board power handling seems to have effected the USB so if using razor items that have high poll rates there could be an issue.

To me a P79 is well worth at least $150 more than a P78, maybe even more.

Edit; A side note to the added amperage to the CPU is I run the Targus 180w so there is more than stock amperage available to the entire system.

No, DO NOT BUY ANY GATEWAY FX series laptop. $400 is a rip off for the 7811 FX. The graphics card is 3 generations old and for $100 more, you can find better spec'd used laptops online.

The reason for the premium is the 16x10, especially in the 7811 or other 1920x1200 screens. Otherwise you are correct, old card, old CPU and old everything else.................

For 2 cents worth, mine is still going strong after all these years - running with W7 64 bits at the moment.

    cheers ...
