My question is pretty simple. Is it worth it to install Windows Vista X64 on this Gateway FX laptop? One of my reason for wanting to do so is to recognize the 4GB ram I installed.

    Thanks

Why would you install 4Gb in it in the first place? I thought the stock 3Gb can run dual-channel.

Dual Channel 2x2gb runs betters. In 3gb, 2gb+1gb, it supposely utilize 2.25gb of ram in DC and rest regular. Regardless, DC is only faster by 5% in Core 2 Duo processor compared to AMD processor which DCing would be over 30%. I personally would upgrade if I see a 2gb ram stick for $20.

Whether upgrading to Vista 64, well, its alot slower ie Crysis runs like dog. But it is stable. I personally like Vista 64 on my desktop. Don't think I will install on my FX even if I have 4gig ram.

Hmmm...Interesting. After installing the other 2GB stick my vista memory rating went from 4.6 to 5.0 which is a huge improvement :D

You say it's slower in games? Hmm that's strange. Especially crysis "witch uses 64bits instructions for 15% boost in CPU power". You sure it's not because of the drivers?

64bit crysis definately is slower. When on snow/ice level, my desktop c2d 3.5ghz 8800gt crawls... Only way to play Crysis on Vista64 is using -dx9. Its been seen and posted at most forum that you loose 20% performance using Vista 64 in Crysis.

My FX using Vista 32 runs better Crysis DX10 then my desktop on Vista 64.

Hey I wanted to post this again, I absolutely detested Windows Vista until I started turning off stupid features.

One of the biggest things I hated was Forced Driver signing, but you can actually disable that by hitting F8 when your computer restarts and clicking "Disables forced driver signing" until I did that I couldn't install crap, now I can install any/everything I used in XP and it all runs without a hitch.

The other thing I HATED (probably more that driver signing actually..) is UAC, but just go into user accounts in the control panel, and click on your account, then "Enable or Disable User Account Control (uac) then just disable that stupid thing. and VIOLA! no more "are you sure? are you sure? are you sure?" and doing that alone has made vista run a heck of alot better. It's been pretty rock stable for me since then.

From what I understand there are 2 updates that actually force driver signing on. I can't remember the names of em, but i've posted them before in the long FX thread somewhere. Also just Turn off Auto Updates and update only when you need too, otherwise you pretty much get a bunch of stuff that makes vista run ridiculously slow. So someone running vista turn that stuff off and lets see how much better that lappy runs =D
