I play CSS on a daily basis and sometimes randomly, I would get MAJOR fps spikes from 100 FPS to 9-15 FPS. This has been going on since I started playing it a few days ago and I recently decided to blow dust from the back to see if it would make a difference.

Those are my temps from playing CSS for about 10 minutes. Is that normal, high, or too high?
I bought this laptop from bestbuy and still have insurance on it. Should I take it back and have them look at it if its a problem or do I unscrew the back and do something else?
Thanks alot.

Optimal temps should be at the level 70-80
If your driver crashes and the game crashes it will suggest that it is too hot. -
So if neither is happening, am I good?
-
You're actually overheating. 100 C is not a good temp for a GPU to be at. Did cleaning out the vents help?
If that didn't, you might wish to consider putting on thermal paste on the GPU.
How long have you owned the unit? -
Thats too hot mate. Even if you haven't been facing any problems those temp range would decrease the life of your lappy. But honestly its over comfort level. You opened the laptop to clean it ? Even i'd suggest checking the thermal paste.
If needed apply a fresh layer of thermal compound. My suggestion would be ICD7. There are threads and vids on youtube on how to apply it. -
Undervolting my CPU, not GPU, made a difference of 20 degrees. I mean I know the topic is about your overheating GPU, but it doesnt hurt to have your CPU running cooler.
Heres the guide I followed in order to UV my CPU:

Heres another guide for UV your GPU

It kinda helps to raise the back of your laptop up. -
Wow, that's hot.
Are you sure your GPU fan is blowing?
Are you blocking the vent?
CSS Shouldn't pull the gpu that hard. -
My GPU fans are blowing but they are always blowing loud.
Just tested again and It reached 108 celcius in CSS.
When nothing is running, it stays around the 65ish area.
I have some thermal compound from Prolima Tech.
Do I just apply this to the CPU and thats it?
I am not sure what to do and if BestBuy can do something... -
108 C, and it's not auto-shutting down? There might be something wrong with your unit.
-
Doing more tests.
Just applied the thermal paste I had now. It's at 58 celcius idle.
I put thermal paste on both of these parts (I hope thats what I was supposed to do):
Going to go in-game and see what happens after 10 minutes.
And correct, it wasn't auto shutting down. I don't know why. -
Temperatures are around 60 when idle and 70 when in-game.
My idle temps are almost the same as my game but they should definitely be lower (Below 50 at least).
This doesn't make any sense. Please help.
I re-applied thermal paste to both spots in this picture:
What else can I possibly do? -
Have you cleaned the surface to get rid of the old residue b4 applying the thermal paste ?
-
I just a plastic bag to put it on and take it off. I don't believe I have rubbing alcohol to take it off.
ANy alternatives? Also, can you explain the difference in the left part and right part (Which one is CPU and what is the other one)?
My temps were 48 celcius on the GPU after my computer was shut off for 10 hours and I am playing CSS and they are at 64-65 celcius.
EDIT: Temps were above 100 celcius while playing CSS...this makes no sense according to HW. -
GPU idle is 53 and in-game it is around 65ish after re-applying the thermal and cleaning it with a paper bag.
-
i thought something was wrong with mine... mine is about 48 idle and when i run furmark on extreme burn it hits a max of 69...
i thought mine was a little on the low side and i might be downclocked or something -
My temps hit 86 celcius in-game. Can someone please explain to me what is going on? I re-applied thermal paste 3 times already. It should definitely not be that high.
-
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?

Still overheating. Re-applied thermal paste today, going to wait for it to kick in for like the 4th time....
It hit 100 celcius. IDK WHAT THE HELL TO DO! AND THIS IS IN CSS WITH SETTINGS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. -
I play CS:S too and even my temperatures aren't this high. I would suggest getting this checked out, and it should have auto shutdown at those temps. You're lucky you still have the warranty.
-
I still got warranty but one problem: I spilled tea on it today and didnt damage anything from what I see. This issue has been happening for a while now but If I bring it back, I dont want them to say "Oh, we felt something sticky which could be water. Sorry, nothing we can do."
-
Is your laptop refurbished?
-
Nonetheless, most people do see some decrease in temps immediately, the fact that you are still running that high is a cause for concern.
If they do find some signs of liquid damage, it is very likely that they will deny your claim based on that. -
Ill wait 7-8 days and see what happens.
It is not refurbished. -
Could it be that my thermal paste is crap? I believe it is arctic silver.

pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
Don't know how much warranty time you have left, but you could order a new keyboard if you can find one, then send it back with that one installed. Booom! Cheaper than a new comp. still.
-
Still happening.
pmassey, thanks for the idea.
How do they determine if a laptop has water damage? I heard litmus paper, but I am not sure. When my water spilled, i believe it went under the keys and into the speaker but everything works fine.
Temps are still crappy...
Would it be affordable if i took my laptop to like a PC repair shop or someone that does hardware on craigslist for example? -

if the cooling system on your gateway is similar to the cooling system on my gateway then the thermal paste your replacing is for the cpu and chipset not the gpu. on my laptop you have to open the laptop up and the cooling heatsink for the gpu is on the other side of the board.
-
Thats what it is...haha.
How do I get to the GPU? I have no clue how to do it. I know how to open the laptop up and take the heatsink out and replace the chipset and CPU but I am not sure how the GPU looks like or how to get to it. -
different drivers also helps a little. I have a 7805u and i switched my drivers from official nvidia drivers to dox custom drivers and my idle temps went from 50+C TO ABOUT 46c which is pretty good in my book
-
There is a guide stickied at the top of the Gateway Section of this forum. Do all of that then you get to the GPU...Good luck.
Is my 7805u overheating?
