Ive experimented with overclocking my 9800m GTS on my p7805u, but keep coming up with poor results. I'm using the nvidia performance tool to do so btw. Even going up 50-100mhz for each causes the video to get really distorted a couple minuets in playing things like GTA4, and 3dmark06. Temps are just fine too, never reaching 70c. It only gets distorted like that when i have both my CPU (X9100) and GPU overclocked too btw. Running a game with just the CPU overclocked (13x, 1.3125VID) is just fine but when I overclock the GPU too thats when I get problems. So is there an easy fix, or is my GPU just not worthy of overclocking?

Everyone that I've seen OC their 9800m GTS has gotten at least 100mhz with no problems. Have you tried to put the CPU at stock clocks and undervolt that, then try the GPU OC? From my experience, it could be several things:
1. Bad VRAM. - Most likely, this is the problem 95% of the time
2. Insufficient voltage. Have you undervolted the card? I wouldn't expect that it would require more though, everyone who has undervolted has also maintained decent overclocks. - Possible, don't think so though
3. Power adapter is bad and damaged the GPU. - Unlikely -
if you just oc the GPU is it ok?

Sorry for the delayed reply. Anyway I just tried stuff with just the GPU overclocked, and all is well there. Even got a higher score on 3dmark06 than having the cpu overclocked with no GPU overclok. I guess Ill just use that setup from now on then. Unless there are other suggestions to not have that issue with having both be overclocked?

If you can only over clock one or the other then usually the brick is about ready to go as you are at its limits..............
-
Run with out the battery and you will definitely determine if the brick is inadequate. Grafted my plug onto a generic 19v 150w brick and have been running a x9100 CO @ 3.591 for 9 months now w/o a battery.

Hmmmmm tried both overclocked for a half hour, without the battery, and that seemed to "fix" my problem. Gonna do some more testing now to see how well this particular solution holds up.
-
Well now 20 minuets later im not having the video issue anymore when both are overclocked, but now games just crash all together. My temps are all fine too, (gpu 65c, cpu 70c at the max) so its all very strange.

You mean that the entire computer crashes, not just a CTD (crash to desktop) during a game? It sounds like your power adapter has gone bad, I'd place everything at stocks clocks and pick up another power adapter to replace yours.

Alright so is this good enough then? AC Adapter Charger for Gateway 600 M-6844 M280 M465-G T-6330u p-6313 p-7805u FX | eBay
I was looking through older posts awhile ago about people getting new bricks and some were getting ones with a higher wattage, should I do the same or just stick with this? -
I think that one is too weak, its only rated at 90 watts, I think the stock adapter is 120 watts. This one is $23 at Amazon: Amazon.com: HQRP AC Adapter / Charger / Power Supply Cord for Gateway P-7805U FX P-7807U FX P-7808U FX Laptop / Notebook 120W Replacement plus HQRP Coaster: Computers & Accessories Provides 120 watts. Targus makes one that has 180 watts as well. I think it is this model: TARGUS UNIVERSAL NOTEBOOK AC POWER ADAPTER 180W APA05US | eBay but I'm not certain. TANWare will know.

That is the addapter but get the tips and plug too....................
Edit; I just recently got a Kill a Watt and with the P79 running 3DMark06 I see 140-145 watts being pulled from the plug. Even at 85% efficiency of conversion this shows where a 120w brick is just way too small................. -
Just got my 180w in the mail the other day. All is good now and everything works just fine with both overclocked. Just wanted to say thanks guys
-
Edit; Good to hear as well the brick solved the issues............

Is my GPU just not good enough for overclocking?
