I keep getting messages of "Your USB device has malfunctioned. Please reinstall the device or, if the problem persists, replace the malfunctioning device." I know for a fact that the devices aren't broken; it has the same error message for any flash drive that I put in, and an external hard drive (that works one out of every three times I plug it in). Can this be fixed without a reinstall?

Have you made your driver recovery disc?
If nto yes you can still reinstall the drivers you will just have to hunt them down. I b elieve iaTa's driver guide has them listed. -
the easiest way to install drivers is to hit the install button.

You could try updating all your drivers by downloading them from Gateway's site. It should fix the problems you're running into when trying to access USB keys.

Which drivers control the USB ports? Is it chipset. There are no dedicated USB drivers that I can see, which it what my poorly worded OP was intended to point out. -
i am glad to help any time.

The chipset drivers cover the USB ports, go to the INTEL website and download the application for your version of Windows.
