Hey ive been lurking here for along time finally picked me up an FX. I have 1 question though, is doing a fresh vista install worth the trouble? I disabled all the crap that came on the laptop but if a clean install will boost my frames in crysis im up for it! Also about how long does it take to do the clean install.

    Thanks
    -Mike

    YES
    you will notice it
because there is a lot of crap in the registry as well
vista installs like in 25 minutes then you have to install all the drivers
make a recovery dvd though it well have all the drivers

An additional question. Are there any worthwhile programs that come with the laptop that we should reinstall after a fresh install and where are they? I can't find anything on the provided other than the OS.

    hold on there speed racer....*lol*

just how many frames are you getting?
is that the 6831 or 6860?
is that the 1.66 or 1.83 ghz cpu?
    32 bit or 64 bit?
and are you trying to run it all very high, high, medium or low?
    1440x900 or lower res?
are you running it using dx9 or dx10

and last but not least...just how many frames we're you expecting to obtain....

I seriously doubt that a clean install will increase your gaming performance and if it does it will be so minimal that you won't notice it. What it will do just like deleting off all the bloatware is make your computer a little snappier in Windows. It might boot 3 seconds faster and maybe will use 20mb less ram at start up. The best thing to do for crysis is make sure you have new drivers, have it patched at least to 1.1, and run it in DX9. I ran it at all high 1440x900 DX9 and it worked pretty well 80% of the time (no stuttering 22-28 fps). So I dropped shaders and shadows to medium and now it runs well 90% of the time with just a few slowdowns, although I haven't tested these settings at the end of the game yet.

Ya the end game starts to get some nasty slow down even on my [email protected] and 8800gtx . i have most things set to high on my 6860 except the mentioned shaders and shadows to medium i also turned down motion blur and the post process effects as well.

Yeah, Cyberlink Power2Go, but I think you'll have to burn it to DVD by creating the driver/apps DVD first. This should be done anyway as most of the drivers aren't included on the Gateway OEM Vista DVD.

I have a 6860FX. I have it set on medium right now at 1280x768 it runs very well. I havent done any optimizations on Vista if there are any (New to it) and im using the stock drivers with no overlocking.

try this little thing here and see how many more frames you get.

make a new shortcut for crysis
then edit it so it looks like this
    the run it
it will run in dx9 mode
you should pick up about 10+ frames and can go a higher resolution as well

that's if you haven't tried this way already.

    "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Bin32\Crysis.exe" -dx9

new drivers that seem to work fairly well..

Ive been playing Crysis on Everything High at 1280x768 im getting about 20-25 frames solid with no real lag. I just ran 3DMark 06 and got a 7339 3DMarks with the default options. Dunno if thats real great or not its my stock 6860FX on a fresh restart with nothing programs open.

I did not see much of a difference doing a clean install other than the satisfaction of doing so. Regardless you should make the driver and application disk in case anything else should go wrong.

Using the standard "remove programs" under the control panel, turning off UAC and running CC cleaner did a fair job to start.

If you are comfortable with the steps, hose a driver install or catch the mother of all hijacks, do the clean install.

edit: i agree with you on this

really if you just uninstall norton your computer piks up 50 speed increase... :D

and we do clean installs to load up all our own junk... :D :D :D too funny.

and i got that 11k 3dmark06 with all my junk installed. this is a tech/gaming/business machine so it's loaded for everything you can think of...just about. :D
