It came running windows 7, but the boot up is long, and even when it gets to windows it still takes like a minute or maybe a couple minutes before I can do anything. Can you guys tell me how to make it boot faster by removing programs that gateway has preinstalled or anything from start up to remove? Pretty much only thing I have installed on the computer is norton antivirus (the one from comcast) an HP printer, firefox and aol.

i always go with a fresh OS install but you can use this as an alternative to that.

It sounds like you have too many start up programs. Instead of going off with an OS install try this first.

If you do not know what a program is google it, moreover avoid messing with windows components and you should be fine
Start with that and see how it goes -
how much ram do you have? what version x86 (32bits) or x64 (64bits)? What processor? A fresh install is always recommended...you will lose less time. Try another antivirus the norton itself takes a bunch of resources..

it has intel core 2 duo processor p8700 with 4 gb ram nvidia geforce gtx 260m and 320 gb harddrive. there is a lot of things listed in the start up programs, but i dont understand 90% of what they are for. Can you just tell me the main things that need to be in the start up? Oh and I just did a format about 3 weeks ago too so that didn't help. Pretty much the only things I have installed on the computer is Norton from Comcast, HP printer, firefox, yahoo messenger, AOL and itunes. Can you just tell me the required start up things I need to run the computer? I will just keep those and uncheck the rest of em. -
Why don't you post a screen shot of the processes you have running at startup.
Pretty much, X2P above has posted what you could do. How about telling us the model number of your computer. Armed with that little nugget of info would get alot of those users to weigh in with their experiences and getting that rig of yours flying.
Just got a gateway laptop in december
