Have an unopened 7405GX. The reviews in forum appear quite positive, and believe I could be happy with my purchase. (Best Buy special) Thought it had a multiple purpose drive only to discover the box lists a 8x DVD RW. I would like a CD to play some older games once in a while. Primary purpose is for doing PowerPoint presentations. I have an external CD player. Would using the external be an option to make a decision to keep the Gateway? Additionally, I have a 1G USB jump drive that in some respects makes the CD obsolete. Basically, I need help deciding if I should keep the Gateway or go back to Best Buy and replace with the Toshiba Model: A65-S1070 that is hundreds of dollars less, but would meet my minimum laptop needs. Any type of feedback would be great.

I think you do have a multipurpose drive. DVD rw drives usually burn CD's.
It will play the cd's and should also burn them. Check your drive in your device manager and see what it says.
I think your fine. -
the 7405 will play and burn cd's or dvd'd. may I ask what will it's main purpous before and how much did you pay? If you read my other posts alot of the gateways straight out of he box have pixel issues or hinge cracking problems. If your not in a hurry or have to use it I would order one online from Dell or Hp.
I took my 7405 back to best-buy 5 times and never got a good one ended up getting the new compaq X6000 for like $200 more and hella better features..

I apologize for being such a doorknob. Now a days it goes without saying that the disk drive is a multipurpose drive. Paid $1,249 after the $25.00 in store, Best Buy rebate. (Tax was three times as much at the rebate) I will be using 7405GX for showing Powerpoint projects on a Epson projector. Figured a decent vidio card would make a differnce in the quality of the projects I show to friends, and some professional presentations at work. I am happy that the laptop runs Far Cry and most likily will be playing games as much as showing presentations.

From what I've seen, it is the eMachines - branded units that comprised the bulk of the units that had the hinge issue. Granted, both the Gateway 74xx & eMachines 68XX series use the same Arima motherboard and layout (as do models from at least six other companies), but there seems to be a higher reliability rate on the Gateway models. I haven't seen a lot of pixel problems with either model, though (FWIW, I am a computer tech, so I've seen the hinge problem up close and personal on many an occasion)
I'd personally buy a Gateway before HP/Compaq or Dell, mainly because of past experiences with the various manufacturers.
Keep the 7405GX????
