Has anybody else had this issue with their P-FXs? My DVD drive seems to be really slow to initialize when a program needs it... it's almost as if it's turned off and then needs to be turned back on every time a program calls for it. This is really annoying because one of my games (G-NOME) plays the music tracks off of the CD and the game lags for up to a whole second while it searches for a new track. This is obviously not a too-slow hardware issue as the game is from 97.

Is Vista turning off my DVD drive when not in use? Is there another explanation for it?

Go to the Device Manager, Check in IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and see if a device with current transfer mode of DMA. It might have been set to PIO mode

3 of my 4 ATA devices are in DMA mode. My first ATA channel 1 doesn't have a mode... it doesn't give any modes listed or a check box with the option to operate in DMA mode. Could this be the problem?

    that must be empty.
That's the reason why it doesn't show nothing.

I have also had minor issues with the optical drive, but nothing that lead me to think it was "bad".

Could someone who has replaced the stock drive with a Blueray drive comment as to whether they have noticed similar issues? This could perhaps indicate whether it's a potential Vista settings issue or a hardware issue (although the most common Blueray replacement appears to come from the same manufacturer as the stock drive).

my optical drive is noticeably slow in loading things too, and im on the m-152xl.
the P-FXs use slot load right? probably the same optical is used in my machine as in the FX

No slot, just the standard "slim" pop-out tray.

I do have the slotload on my 172. Strange that Tybalt has the same issue with his tray load though.
