I have a gateway with an upgraded 79** series motherboard a qx9200 (running stock for now) and a 260m gtx (running stock for now).

When i am playing games the laptop seems to shutoff completely when i look over at my power supply the green light on it is no longer glowing so i have to unplug it then plug it back in then turn on my laptop does this mean i need to upgrade my power supply and there is not enough power to support my hardware?

I was looking at some Targus 180watt power supply's to upgrade too but im not sure if this is the issue.

My power adapter used to do that as well. It's overheating and auto shuts down to prevent damage. An extremely simple solution that actually worked for me is to turn the power adapter sideways so that it is has more ventilation space vertically. Now my power adapter has yet to crash with an overclocked GPU, CPU, extra ssd drive and many usb devices and external hard drives plugged in.

If it is overheating in the designed method of use then you are tempting fate rigging it to run out of spec. Best to get a new supply and the Targus 180w is the one I would recomend. I would have to sugest the same for you Andros. If you are tunning that hot I doubt your brick is supplying clean power all the time to your system.

I may be totally wrong but you know what they say about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure.......................

hahaha well it shut off even trying you method andros so im assuming it cant handle the load of power drawn thank god its is only happening from more intensive games than wow.

I tested it with another power supply and it works. so I believe that this power supply I have is beat to death. I probably wont be able to play prototype 2 tomorrow :( also this power supply is running smoldering hot compared to the one i tested with.

TANWare im sure your right but, andros is prolly just going to stick with putting his powersupply in a jar of liquid nitrogen or something to keep it cool (just kidding) lol.

Hehe, I really don't know how my Power Supply hasn't died yet. I probably use it 20 hours a day on average as I leave my laptop on even when I'm not using it very often.

And yes it does get smoldering hot while gaming (especially at 1920x1200 in which occasionally it has shut off) but playing at 1360x768 on my HDTV seems to be the sweet spot.

Haha and your right, I am too fond of it after 3 years of loyal service, and I remember to this day what really makes this Laptop purchase special.

When I bought this laptop (it was the last display unit at a BB in Long Island) the screen was making strange artifacts and the guy who worked there told me the Power Supply was no good. It was also the only one with the *faulty* 1920x1200 screen left in the whole state of New York apparently as I had searched and called everywhere for it.

So I bought it at a fraction of the price, risking having a machine that didn't work or wouldn't last very long. It widens my smile today to know that my once *reject* laptop turned out to be the best one out of the lot :D

That is exactly what happened to me i bought this laptop originally from a random guy on craigs list for 400 dollars SUPER CHEAP. He said there were artifacts and problems with the screen then i used your fix and everything worked great for a while then i figured out later this was best thing ive ever had and amazing screen!

Of course later because of my urge to mod/change everything i upgraded the motherboard and moved on my way to a x9200 quad oced and so on which probably wasn't the best for the power supply but I have now gotten a new one and everything is running great!

Exploded power supply? Must be some cheap Chinese copy - the original ones have built in protection (my laptop has built in protection on the motherboard, as well, but it works only with original HP adapters with Smart-something).

My advice: Undervolt your processor! And your graphics card, too! For me, it meant the difference between throttling to ~70% at stock on a 130W power supply and being able to run both overclocked (with lower temps, as well)!

    Exactly!

Bought a cheap 19v 150w HP brick to replace stock one since my X9100 caused it to shutdown when stress testing. New brick barely gets warm Grafted stock tip onto it. You have to watch polarity since the shield on the replacement was the positive side.

Keyboard error, press F1 to continue.
