Just wondering which cooler you guys are using because I understand this laptop can get pretty hot while gaming. My budget is around $50-$60 and any suggestions would be much appreciated.![]()

You don't really need a major cooler; just prop the back of the laptop up (the Targus X stand lowered my temps dramatically).

What I've done for my temps is...
Undervolted the CPU, use the Zalman NC2000, and swapped out the stock 7200 HDD with two 5400's. My temps have been reasonable while gaming. -
Although it didn't DRAMATICALLY lowered my temps (on P-6860FX about ~3C-5C on GPU), its nice because it does not take any power from the USB port. Plus, its cheap
Here's a deal at newegg.com, $25 + S&H:

I got given a NC1000 from a friend of mine....I know it is built for a 15in laptop but do u think it could also work for a 17in?

Best Value (Also least expensive): Bottle Caps
Best Solution (Also most expensive): NZXT Cryo LX
I have a cryo and will never need to worry about my laptop overheating -

If you want a quick solution to keep it cooler when gaming then prop up the back by putting a book or something else soft that's about 1/2 inch thick.
This dropped my temps from 78 in cod 4 stock clock, to 70. -
I use a NC2000 on my 6860, since then I've never overheated even when running an x9000 at 3ghz and overclocking my video card.

I do have a mesh frame laptop stand (15.00 Walmart, in the Office section with the other wire mesh stuff) and a cheapie 13.00 cooler under that to blow air up, but I don't really need the cooler- in fact, I forget about turning it on a lot lol. -

wish the targus x had some plastic or something underneath. i do use the laptop in bed sometimes and keep a hardcover book underneath. even though the targus raises the notebook by an inch or so, its still too close to the bedding.

Oh, the Targus X-Stand is not meant for use on soft cushion-y surface. It's meant to be used as a stand on flat and hard surfaces. I highly suggest getting an X-Pad, its highly praised by CNET. However, the downside of this laptop passive cooler.... you can only buy it through the official site or through eBay (or Amazon).
Here's what it looks like:

Here's an article on laptop cooling pads:

Now I can just take the stand and the laptop wherever, including soft surfaces like my bed, and it's fine. It also folds down to about 1" high for travel
Edit: found a link to the stand. The one at Walmart just has the mesh stand and is 15.95 or so and this one has an additional USB hub etc. and is 40.00 - 99.00 lol. Ouch. -

The Xpad wont give you as much leverage like the X-Stand will, but it does give you enough leverage to get air intake from the bottom. Plus, it dissipates heat from the only source which does not get any cooling (i'm talking about the HDD here
)
-
The Xpad is way too small for a 17 inch laptop. Had one, it was decent, but the Targus X stand is a much better idea, at least for the FX series.
-
GREAT idea, I have the mesh laptop stand too and what I did was wire 2 120MM case fines to power through USB and put them on the black bottom part of the mesh..just got done putting some rubber legs off of the bottom of desktop PCs on my stand +1 wootage.. -
Well, as you may have noticed it's neither the cpu not the hard drive(s) tha heat this baby up! It's that GTS high-clocked gpu that does it! Sure cpu tems can drop from 50-53C to ~40C, same goes for the HDD. But when the 9800M GTS will cook eggs when gaming, do you think undervolting your cpu would make any real difference?
Well, back in August I went to the local store to check on coolers (having searched some forums first) and I had my mind on the Zalman NC2000! I was able to see it in action there since they were using it on one of their own laptops and I was amazed! I could feel my hand freeze when I touched it!
However, a few hours later back at my house I realized that my new NC2000 would not perform as well! The reason is that the guy at the store had his laptop very close to the aircondition so the air that was flowing through the cooler was already very cool! So unless you can get a cooler with some real cooling technology, then just lifting the laptop up 1" and adding any kind of fan will do pretty much the same work as a $50 Zalman! Sure now that it's winter I feel the "freeze" effect, but ... well... it's winter! Theres not really much need for extra cooling anyway!
EDIT: That NXTZ pad looks huge! At least the zalman is somewhat portable!
