This thread is for upgrading the screen on our 6831FX laptops. This will probably be my next upgrade when i do decide to spend more money. I know some of you have upgraded and installed better screens, so post up which models you have running!
Title edited to reflect WSXGA

How about updating the title and including WSXGA (1680x1050) screens too? I'm going to upgrade at some point as well, but not sure I want to go all the way to WUXGA (1900x1200).
My concern is as newer games come out with more demanding graphic requirements, it will be tougher and tougher to run them at native resolutions (esp. 1900x1200) without turning detail way down. With a slightly lower resolution, my hope is I will be able to stretch the point at which newer games become unable to run at native resolution and higher detail settings.
Just a thought, others might be interested in going to a middle of the road upgrade too, and maybe with enough input it might even get stickied. -

My input - I've been waiting for a thread like this since I first booted my gateway up. I don't even care if the screen is still 1440x900 i just want one that looks good. The viewing angles and the washed out look at the bottom of my screen is the only complaint I have against this computer. Hope somebody can lead me/us towards quality screen that I can reaplce myself.

This 17" LG WUXGA has been confirmed to work on another forum:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSAA:US:11&Item=160213282663
Its an LG manufactured 1900x1200 WUXGA LCD screen for a DELL Inspiron 1720 17" WUXGA LCD.
"The screen is in, and it looks beautiful. It's far and away better looking than the stock panel. The new panel is made by LG."
"Once again, Spinitch's guide was most helpful, although there were a few snags in the process. The panel came with an inverter mounted on a bracket. I had to carefully pry the bracket off to remove the inverter and fit the panel into the lid. There were also two brackets on top (welded) that fortunatly lined up with two holes on the locking bolts."
"All in all, figure an hour for this upgrade, and be prepared to DIY if you go with something other than a Gateway replacement." -
I'm happy by default as well, however, i've got a Dell 2007WFP for my forensic rig and this thing is awesome in clarity and detail. It's obvious when i put my laptop up against it to see the difference. The colors are brighter and more distinct. At times my lappie's colors and line differentiation are indistinct. I'd like it clearer with more definition.

wont the laptop look stupid with a different top....or do you take it apart and put a new one in, i dont know how you would even replace a screen..
-
For WSXGA, it looks like there are several LG and Samsung 17" LCD pulls on eBay with 0 dead pixel guarantee for $179. I'm tempted to buy a Samsung panel and wing it and see if it fits properly.

I'm pretty happy with mine as a first glare screen. I still prefere matte screens, though. Would love to get a 1680x1050 matte screen one day.

You do have the option to set panel "not to scale" for lower resolution screens. At lest you have a native sharp screen but with black borders around it to keep your gaming FPS up.
I like the stock screen for games and SD-DVD,s which tend to look a bit sharper as they don't scale up as much. Of course, if ya thinking of $blue ray$, go for the WUXGA. -
This has an screen swap how-to among others, http://www.notebookforums.com/thread212385.html

I'm hoping for an XPS 1710 Screen upgrade =D
-
I'm looking right now for a WUXGA screen for my Clevo. Anyone know which is the best *matte* model to get? I assume LG is still best, yes? I've seen an LG with major sparkly though, which was a concern... so knowing the exact model # of a good one would really help.

One that was fairly highly regarded was the panel from the Asus G2S, the B170UW02 V0 (AUO TFT). Highlights are the 8ms response time, 72% color saturation, 2 CCFL backlight. Many of the LG's and Samsungs are 25ms, I believe, and some are single backlight.

crpngdth2001, thank you muchly! I also just spotted the LG LP171WP7 which seems comparable:

Differences highlighted. No mention of backlight type.
Great, I'll ask for either the AUO or this LG. Seems like all LG's are 16-25ms unless you go for the very top end.
Thanks! -
The brightness and contrast are both slightly better on that LG panel, though. I'd be willing to bet its a more common (thus likely less expensive) panel too. -
i know in the past when people had been trying to put another manufactures panel in a xps etc and it had dual lamps it wasnt possible. the extra connections needed to power it or some other things stood in the way from it working . but i would love to see something like that in gateway model cause ive been tempted to pull the trigger a few times on the 6831 but didnt like the screen at all in the display models i had seen.

BTW, that looks like a WXGA (1440x900) Panel, not WUXGA (1920x1200).

i bought a 24" external LCD with an HDMI port for 350 *shrugs*

I'll request the B170UW02 V0 or LP171WU1 if they can't get the AUO.. and see what happens.
Thanks for the help! -

Hmm, there is a local store that sells them.. I may have to do that before too long.
-
anybody knows the gateway stock LCD's spec?
-
on my laptop (the t-1620) it came with a 14.1" so going to a 24" was a huge difference.
just my oppinion get an external LCD and u could even take it with you out if town or whatever becaust there so lightweight now. -
If you really are attached to a screen that large, get one of those stupid 20" "laptops" and be done with it. -

Any LED backlit screens out there? I think I'll wait for one of those.
I am always sitting square to the screen so I can live with it, but showing my kids videos on this screen when they are standing next to me (a foot away) is a problem. The viewable angle is so bad. -
Sorry to bump this older thread, but seems like it could still be relevant... anybody have some screen models that they KNOW will be compatible with these Gateway P Series?? I want a WUXGA with decent color reproduction for graphics work.
-
I am at least going to be upgrading the LCD to WSXGA. I think I'll probably go with a popular LG panel, not sure what i'll do at this point. I will probably do something within the next month though.
-
I hate to rebump an old thread, but I am really interested in some of the newer screens that have come out, like the LP171WU5 (LED backlight).
Given that it is LED though, does anyone have any idea on if this will work with our systems (6831FX)?
Now, I see that the LED model is: 382.2 × 247.5 × 7.0
Where as the old original model is: 382.2 × 244.5 × 7.0
LED aside, is there really enough room for the extra 3mm? -
Just a bump again.. any ideas?
-
I really doubt that an LED screen will work in that laptop.
