Anyone have a list of the software they removed from the 6860? Also what software did you use to clean? ccleaner?

I just got one, and don't want to make any big mistakes.

    Thanks for your help!

A format and reinstall WILL work, but its more work than needed. Gateway doest crap the machine up too much actually and uninstalling a few programs and disabling a few startup items/services does the trick nicely. Heres what I do:

    1.) Uninstall Norton. Its sucks.
2.) Uninstall all Gateway software including games and bigfix.
3.) Run MSCONFIG and delete most everything in the Startup tab. The only thing I left running is RAID Event Monitor and Synaptics Pointing Device Driver.
4.) From the Services tab, disable Windows Defender and Windows search, then click on Hide All Microsoft Services and disable whats left.
5.) Install Eset NOD32 or your flavor of GOOD malware prevention. ie-NOD32, Kaspersky, Bitdefender, etc. Stay away from Norton and McAfee.

*NOTE* These instructions are just suggestions and may not apply to your system if you have installed other programs. My suggestions are for a machine just removed from the box and booted up.

It is not really needed if you know which programs to uninstall, too much is put on reformating a brand new computer. I I have done it both ways and there is no diffrence, but to each their own. Just make sure you update your drivers, and do a disk cleanup, and defrag, you should be good to go.

yes there is so much carp in the registry its ridiculous
    you will see a improvement
and there will be space in the c drive wasted also the recovery thing is pretty much a waste of space

or if your to scared then
msconfig block all startups and services except the windows
put it on 2cores in mscongfig and max memory
    also get auslogic defrag
    and defrag
get ccleaner and run the disk cleanup
change the search settings in vista and change boot time/shutdown to something low
also buy a usb hd/or sd card for ready boost and uninstall all crapware and freeware and shareware
then go thru the registry and delete and crap

    also update the drivers
way to much caffeine for me right now

I did not find the 6860 so riddled with bloatware.

    Norton
    BigFix
    Remove Windows Defender from startup
    Gateway Games

    I'm good to go.

Let me know if it increases performance, I would love for some games to run a bit smoother. Also, what does BigFX do or whatever the program is called?

I've done it, and i cant figure out if it actually increases my boot time or not. I'm not even sure what it does lol

As to big fix. Its supposed to be a "repair" proggie, but mostly its just something to uninstall as its basically useless.

i noticed a decrease in boot time when i restarted after applying it. went from about a 45 second wait to about a 20 second wait after booting into vista and logging in before the desktop was usable

as for what it actually does, i would hazard a guess and say that it separates the the boot process into two threads lets the machine eat through it.

That made my booting up much much longer; PC reacted as like when I change a priority one a program via task manager; things slow down big time.

After I fixed it in safe-mode; when I retried to set 2-processors again. It doesn't give the option for 2 processors anymore; only the number "1" is there.

If I just go into my msconfig and Grey them out and click apply should that go back to the normal way?

That could be true. I'll have to do some actual timings to see what happens. But just watching i couldnt really tell a diffrence. I've screwed with so much in the registry and msconfig and everything i dont even know what my system is supposed to be doing anymore.

I wonder if people with quad cores can select 4 processors... that would pretty much tell us if its allowing windows to split the boot between all of the cores. Which i would think is exactly as you said is the case, but it makes me wonder why that wouldn't be "standard" as pretty much everything is 2 core now

nonono, it doesn't sound as bad as we make it. Vista loads up pretty well on this laptop; especially with the SP1 updates.

Also I figured out that if I put maximum ram in the bootup option; it causes my booting-up to cough up. Simply keeping it to 2 processors; but setting like 2.5gig of ram for booting fixed it (basically I reduced the ram count compared to before where it was set to 4gigs). No it loads up faster.

Also a nice thing to do is click the "No GUI" option. If you do you get to skip the Windows logo during the load up; and can go directly to your password log-in.

i noticed that while setting the max memory (i set it to 3072 just for kicks) that task manager, and my little windows sidebar tool, wont read anything above the capped 3072 limit, so if you have 4gb of ram installed, i wouldnt recommend this. i verified this by turning off the max memory option and rebooting, to which both task manager and the sidebar tool, reported the full amount of ram installed in my system.

My time from a cold boot (depressing the power switch) to a usable desktop is right at 70 seconds.

I've pretty much followed the steps throughout this thread. Is this a good time, or is there something else I should be trying. Keep in mind, I still have the 1.83ghz CPU installed, and haven't upgraded to the T9300 YET hehe.

The only things that are in my startup list are:
    • Nvidia Compatible Windows Vista Display driver, version 167.46
    • RAID Event Monitor (I already unchecked it once lol, I don't use RAID)
    • IDT Audio
    • AVG Internet Security

Thanks all to the great response. I didn't have time to do it last night, so I'll try today. I'm new to Vista too and hate that Defender thing. Why ask 2x for everything I try to launch!
