.. Would you recommend switching back to XP? Just using Vista reminds me of how much I hate it.. and a friend 'gave' me his copy of XP Pro Corporate Edition with SP 2..

So.. would you recommend switching to XP if I have the OS disk.. I do still have my drivers disk from when I first brought the laptop home. Does everything work with this laptop in XP? Anything I should be cautious about?

If it is anything like installing XP on a 6860 - then expect a lot problems installing drivers. I gave up trying to install XP - simply wasnt worth it.. Besides, the performance would only be marginal.

    What annoys you about Vista?

Like Phasio said, expect problems with drivers! You may be lucky though!

P.S. I would be carefull and make sure the license agreement for XP corp is legit!

I would say it might not be worth the hassle... what's the problems with Vista? There are some things you can tweak...

switched to vista 6 months ago. i was just tired of using xp for 6 years. stability wise i would say its a cross between ME and XP. if u haven't done the basic tweaks (UAC, indexing etc) then its the most annoying thing in the world. but little things like computer/programs freezing, things not working as they should. its mostly driver related.
i haven't even gotten into vista 64 yet on my new comp. but during the limited time i've spent on it, its even more annoying.

Exactly.. Beforre getting my 6860 - I expected Vista to be pure sheeet... After turning off UAC, I actually find it running more stable than XP ever has for me.

If you really want to install XP, there is a whole XP "Upgrade" thread. I would agree that after turning off UAC, Vista got a lot more useable. The dll (and other executable) signing support still leaves a bit to be desired.

Between ME and XP? That's a big gap. By the time Vista came out, XP was pretty rock solid for me. I can leave my system on for weeks. And ME, well, like BOB, the Microsoft history books have no mention of ME. What an utter dissappointment (Do NOT get me started). I find Vista to be closer in stability to XP and, so far I think Vista is more stable at this point in it's lifecycle than XP was at the same point in XP's lifecycle.

If you want a laptop that comes preinstalled with Vista but can support XP, buy a Lenovo, the put XP drivers out for just about all their laptops.

That's odd. I've been running Vista 64-bit for over a year and love it! All the software/hardware I need/use works flawlessly :D

Legacy software/hardware either needs to die out, or programmers need to get off their lazy arses and do some work.

if you like to game or use older programs then i would switch to xp. i installed xp on my 7811fx and i noticed that some games and program do run faster on xp. but like everyone said getting the right drivers is a pain...the sound was by far the worst to get to work. i still dont have it just right. everytime i turn on my computer i have to disable and then enable it before it works. it takes about 10-20 seconds to do after boot up. but other than that im glad i went back to xp.
