Hello. I've had my Gateway M-1631U laptop for about 6 months now. Ever since I got it, it has had the habit of going to what seems like sleep mode at random times. The screen goes black, all the LEDs shut off, and neither moving the mouse pad or a keystroke will reawaken it. The internal fan, as well as any peripherals I have plugged in stay on when this happens. If I press the power button, the computer comes back to the Windows log in screen and once logged in, everything resumes as normal. This tends to happen if I'm in the process of closing all my programs before shutting the computer down, once I have nothing open. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

    Additional information on the computer:
Windows Vista Operating System. Service Pack 2
Display Turn-off is set to 20 minutes.
Sleep Mode is set to automatically take effect in 1 hour.
    It is still under warranty.

Also, I had to send my laptop in to Gateway for a fan problem. The computer would overheat without much incentive to do so. Gateway fixed that issue and, as far as I know, put in a new fan.
If there is anything you need to know that I have not covered here, please ask. This problem continually scares me as it only happens once in a while and I keep thinking it's some sort of Operating System issue. I'm decent with desktops but laptops are a new breed of creature to me, so I may not be too familiar with the guts of them, should it come to that.

Does it go to sleep while you are using it?

Yes. Usually when I'm in the process of quitting out of programs.

OS versus hardware is an easy test. Attach your hard drive to any SATA desktop and boot from it and see if your problem occurs. You could also do the opposite with someone's laptop hard drive.

I'm afraid that won't work for two reasons:
    1. I don't want to void the warranty of my computer by opening it.
    2. I can't induce the problem on command and it doesn't happen often enough to be feasible to leave my hard drive in a dock.

Sorry if I sound a little aggressive. It's about 1 a.m. and I'm fairly tired.
