    M-6850FX suggestions

    Ok So i just bought the M-6850FX for a steal too at $800 but i want to swith the processor to something over 2.0ghz what processor would you recomend? is there anything else i could do the get the best performance out of this model? oh and the ram is 3gb 1@2048 and 1@1024 can i just change the one to a 2048 for the max 4gb ram?

    I'd go with the Intel C2D T9300. Around $300 and probably the best performance boost for your money. As far as other tweaks, just make sure you uninstall Norton and replace with something easier on resources such as NOD32, cleanup your startup items, defrag the hard drive and disable indexing. You'd be surprised at how much these 4 "free" tweaks help.

    if i go that route can i put vista 64bit on?

    You can, but with 3gb of RAM, theres really no point as it can be kind of a hassle finding 64bit drivers.

    but i heard x86 only recgonizes 3gb of ram and i plan to go to 4gb

    Why? 3gb is more than enough to do pretty much anything that laptop is capable of doing. If my 6860fx didn't already come with 4gb it would never have 4gb. Albeit 64bit Vista is running great on my machine with very little issue, the 6850fx is missing some important 64bit drivers on the website which may or may not be found elsewhere. There are also some compatibility issues with certain 32bit programs such as firewall and antivirus. But in the end its up to you, just ask yourself if the extra 1gb of RAM is really worth the possible headache.
