I have a problem with my laptop P-7805u. By mistake my anti-virus program replaced original MBR (Master Boot Record) of hard disk to a standard MBR. As a result, the recovery of OS trough the key Alt-F10 does not work now (OS is Vista Home Premium).

Please, anybody who has a same laptop and an original hard drive (with a working recovery function by Alt-F10) upload the MBR of the hard disk or send me on email fossman[dog]mail.ru. Thank you.

    P.S.
MBR is only 512 bytes (not kilobytes!).
A copy MBR to a file can be making par different utilities. For example, in a folder
    C:\Program Files\GATEWAY\Gateway Recovery Management\eRecovery\
    there is a utility MBRwrWin.exe
    A command
    C:\Program Files\GATEWAY\Gateway Recovery Management\eRecovery\MBRwrWin.exe backup c:\MBR_ORIG.BIN
save MBR to file MBR_ORIG.BIN in the root of drive C:\

Did you ever receive a boot disk with your laptop? Or is the recovery disk saved in a partition on the hard drive?

If you do have a disk, you can boot from that into the windows installer, however do not reinstall windows use the option to repair windows. From there you get a cmd line which you can run the cmd:

    bootrec.exe /fixmbr
To rebuild the Master boot record.

    or

    bootrec.exe /fixboot
    To rebuild the boot sector

    or

    bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
    To rebuild boot data.

Those are the easiest methods I'm aware of. I've had to do it once when dual booting with linux and my mbr was overwritten by grub.

You do not understand what I need. I need to work option ALT-F10. It is programmed in the first 354 bytes of MBR. And no utilities or commands do not restore it if it was originally not in the MBR. The standard MBR does not have this option. It is only available in the original MBR, which, in addition contains the word ACER, because it is branded MBR.

In short, once again I repeat, I do not need advice, but I need MBR from Gateway P-7805u.
Please those who can upload it. The rest, please do not worry.

cant you just repair the mbr then boot into windows make restore discs using the gateway software built in and restore from that? Hopefully that would give you the mbr you want?

MBR is not changed and remains a standard after the action that you offer. So I need the original MBR from the laptop Gateway P-7805u, having ALT-F10 function - restoring OS from a hidden partition of HD ( standard MBR does not have this feature!!!). I have a hidden partition on the HD of my laptop. But I need the original MBR (and not the standard MBR like I have now!!!) for a working ALT-F10 function. Is it really so hard to understand?

I have the necessary knowledge for MBR: I know it structure, how it can be restored, rewritten, installed, repaired, etc. That is, I do not need advice on these matters.

All necessary information about MBR can be found in internet, for example ( in English):
    Boot Records Revealed!
and in particular, about the Windows Vista MBR:
Windows Vista Master Boot Record (MBR)

I need only the original MBR from Gateway P-7805. And then it's done one command (directly from Windows):

    MBRWRWIN.EXE install overwrite orig_mbr

So my request (see the first post of this topic) is addressed to an owners of this model laptop, who have а opportunity to upload the original MBR.

Does my MBR get overridden when I install a new OS on my P-7805u? If so, would it work for your system? (I did a format and install of Win7 on my P-7805u.) Another question: Are you saying that if you can't get an original MBR you will not be able to access that hidden partition? Also, I couldn't find a ALT F10 function for any Windows OS except for some ACER machines. There is one for Gnome but all it does is maximize your window.

You have posted MBR , which is not the original MBR from the laptop Gateway P-7805u . Most likely your MBR is standard. First, he failed to validate using the utility HidChk.exe (located in the same folder as the MBRwrWin.exe [see the first post in this thread]), and secondly, the body of the MBR does not contain the word ACER , which is in the original MBR .

You can save your MBR to a file, as described above and open it with any text editor (like Notepad ). If any of the binary code, you will find the word ACER , then most likely your MBR is the original and most likely it will work in my system. Formatting (usually, but not low level) does not affect the MBR . But the WinXP installation overwrites the original MBR on a standard MBR (if before installing on the disk was WinVista ). In this case, the original MBR can be returned only way that I described. As for Win7 , I do not know, because not using it. But you can easily verify this (see above).
Access to content hidden partition and access to the system restore from hidden partition are different things.
To access the contents of the hidden partition you need only to change its type (to make it unhidden). This is simple.
To be able to restore from a hidden partition, you must have a work function of ALT-F10 (in particular, for laptops P-78xx ), which is programmed in the original MBR .

This is the MBR from my original Windows Vista installation on a Gateway P-7805u.

I do have Windows 7 installed on my SSD, but i never touched the original installation on the other drive.

Sorry this isn't what you wanted.

I found the original MBR from the laptop Gateway p-7805u.
All the doubters, resent (in particular, ryokowashu) and others can verify the correctness and truth of my words in previous communications. To do this, I put this original MBR to the message.

P.S. I'm sorry if someone hurt. But the question was originally formulated in a sufficiently precise and specific, and my plans to get (or get) the same exact and specific answer. And no suggestions that I know things.

Thanx. I am glad, too. The function of ALT-F10 restored. And I have already restored the system from a hidden partition.
If someone has any similar problems with a laptop in a series of Gateway P-78xx, he can use the MBR. It can be installed as described above.

Sorry to jump in but I feel this is a good time to describe my first Win7 experience. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison they have Win7 with all the default settings, the settings that most non-computer people will be using. The auto-grouping of browsers was horrible. We had to sign up for classes using an application that opened its own windows and didn't use tabs. Not only were the many windows grouped, but switching to a different window involved hovering over the firefox button, waiting for the the screenshots of the browser windows to load, then guessing them from beginning to end since almost all the screenshots looked the same. Text>Images. The Win7 start menu like the Vista start menu is a piece of crap, however a program called VistaStartMenu works for Vista and Win7 and is more like the XP start menu. I feel like on user interface level, Win7 is worse than Vista unless you mess around with the settings and install third party UI programs.
