My Gateway ML6720 will not POST with 4GB of memory installed. It shipped with 2x512MB of PC2-5300S-555-12. I put in 2x2GB PQI DDR-2 667 dual channel and also tried 2 OCZ modules of the same type. Same result. POST fails at 1264MB. If I skip the memory test I get the BSOD just after windows starts booting. Each stick works on it's own, and with the shipped 512 stick for a total of 2.5GB. The computer supports and recognizes over 2 gigs of ram. I am using a 2gb and a 512 mb stick right now. 32-bit Vista can use up to 4 gigs of ram depending on the system configuration. My brother's Dell XPS is using 3.5GB of RAM on 32-bit Vista. I wonder if this might be due to the fact that the system underclocks the 667MHz RAM to 533MHz. I'd switch out the processor, but my brother doesn't want me to dissassemble his new XPS. There are no BIOS updated avalible, and the BIOS supports 4GB of memory.

    Thanks everyone!

I just got 3GB of RAM: 2GB stick and 1GB stick. when I installed it (1GB in the bottom slot, 2GB in the top slot), I got blue screen and can't get into window. I swap slot: 2GB stick in the bottom slot and 1GB stick in the top slot. it worked!!! I got into window with 3GB of RAM. I don't know if this will work with 4GB since I don't have 4 GB

I have the same problem with my ML6720.
I have xp 64bit and vista 64bit installed.
non of the OS can start after 4gb installed.
I tried A-data and G.skill memory purchased from newegg.
It stopped at 1264mb during the memory scan.
there are NO bios update from gateway.

I also tried put in 2gb and 512mb. it won't work with 2gb installed on top, 512 installed in bottom. swapping them will work again.

    NEW UPDATES:
I talked to Crucial reps. They gave me the memory part # which is guarantee to work.
Then, I waited until buy.com has the memory on sale.
Unfortunately, exactly same result as other memory.
I talked to Crucial again, they now saying they give compatibility guarantee if order thru their web site only, even through I ordered the exactly same part # they suggested.

Conclusion: ML6720 (bios 93.08) does not support 4GB ram.
Crucial memory compatibility check tool is marketing bull **** and just try to make sales.

the motherboard in the ml6720 only supports a max of 2gb of ram, or so the spec say

it will not ever support 4gb of ram, even if there was a bios update available

it's irrelevant that his brothers laptop works/shows more than 2 gb's

32-bit OS will not register 4gb u will need 64-bit. OR your mobo cannot support that much memory.

In some cases Gateway states that the max ram on a machine is what the user can upgrade, not what could be upgraded. My case, I have a 7426 which gateway shows it can only be upgraded to 1.5gb, becuase you must disassemble the top part of the laptop to get to the other stick, which I did, now I have 2gb of ram. While its true 32bit os will only use 3gb of ram give or take, it comes down to the mother board.
