I just upgraded my Gateway MX3230 with 1 GB of RAM, but the laptop only recognizes 448 MB (which means it only recognizes 512 MB because 64 MB is used for the video card). Gateway's website claims that the laptop support 1 GB. How can I get it to recognize the full 1 GB, minus the amount the video uses of course?
The old memory was a Hynix 256 MB 200-Pin SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
The new memory module is a Kingston 1GB 200-Pin SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) model KVR533D2S4/1G
Both are 200-Pin SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) memory modules. I don't understand why the laptop doesn't recognize the memory. I just looked at Kingston and Crucial and both of them claim that the laptop can run up to 1 GB of memory too.

Maybe it only supports 2X 512mb and not a single sodimm of 1gb.

Try and reseat the memory and see if that helps.

No, it only takes 1 stick. I have tried pulling the memory out and putting it back in three times and it still doesn't register correctly.
