Any information regarding how/where to get replacement parts for a Gateway notebook, in particular model MX6123, would be greatly appreciated. I particularly need to get a replacement touchpad/button assembly as one of the buttons on the notebook I have is broken.

According to Gateway's customer "service" reps, this info is so proprietary that I have no option other than sending it in for them to repair (since its out of warranty, that also means big $$ out of my wallet - no thanks). I'd like a second opinion on that from the forum gurus.

P.S., I didn't read the rest of the forum first, for which lapse I apologize. If this sort of question has already been asked-and-answered, I crave your indulgence and a quick link to the relevant thread/posting.

Regards all, and have a very Happy New Year!
(just remember, don't get too wild, I can't afford to bail all of y'all out :D )

happy new year too, sad but true,i think only gateway has such parts. if you cannot find a 3rd party seller of the part by googling, do try to buy off ebay a cheaper mx6123 for parts, :p

Thanks. That's what I thought; however, I did manage to get one small ray of hope (or, at least, not despair) out of a Gateway sales rep after I spent several hours beating my head against a brick wall with their tech "support" people via chat and email. The sales rep gave me the url of mundocorp.com, which appears to have the part I need (still refurbished, though) for much less than many of the other sellers I found online ($89 as opposed to $125). That was a distinct change from the party-line I kept getting from the tech reps, who have apparently been trained in the pavlovian method to parrot "send it in to retail service dispatch" in response to any attempt at communication on the part of a "consumer."

BTW, on the subject of the MX6123 - from what I managed to glean, I believe that the ODM that produced the system was Quanta; anyone care to confirm or refute that perception? Second, if Quanta really was the ODM that manufactured this system, anyone got any leads on getting surplus Quanta parts?

Gateway also used Wistron and after the emachines merger Arima as an ODM. At one time I could tell the ODM by the style, but no longer can do so.

    Quanta is a good manufacturer.

Thanks for the info; I bought the MX6123 for a family member in '05, just as the dual core systems were beginning to show up (thus, the Celeron M systems were being, in essence, remaindered off). I'll do a little more poking around to see if I can identify the ODM with any greater certainty.

What I am trying to do is to fix the touchpad buttons (the left one) - someone with a very low frustration level pushed too hard on it and broke something internal so that now the button "floats" around in its housing, has to be wiggled around to make it register as being pushed, and frequently registers multiple pushes when it finally does register. I haven't opened the thing up yet to see if the button can be repaired instead of having to replace it, but I wanted to get a jump on finding a replacement part just in case.

I would love to hear from anyone who's got any inside knowledge (as it were  ) about the buttons on these systems.

Shyster1--I'm just curius what you found, both regarding the ODM and also parts availability.

At one time, Goren maintained a list of ODMs by OEM and model. This was one of the most fascinating spreadsheets I've seen.
