Bought a new MX6425 yesterday, and was stupid enough to NOT make a driver CD before repartitioning the machine and reinstalling...
Well after reinstall, I can not get the Audio to work no matter what driver I try.
None of the conexant ones I tried would succede, they always just say FAIL.
I tried two different Realtek ones, WDM_A380 and WDM_A381. While those installed, and made my error in Device Manager go away, I don't get any sound. (yes, I checked to make sure the volume was turned up in both windows and on the laptop, and I made sure it was not muted).
IF anyone has any suggestions I would love to have them. Or if anyone has a driver from this series of laptops that would be a BIG help...

Figures, right after I post I figure out a work around! I'll post what I did here though, as it may help others.
1. Install Realtek Audio driver (WDM_A380 or WDM_A381, doesn't matter).
2. Reboot
3. Download and try to install the Conexant AC 97 audio driver. You can get the one from Gateway (D00245-001-001 driver), or any other manufacturer that uses this chip in the notebook. Pay attention to where it stores the files. For instance the Gateway driver uncompresses to c:\cabs\directory name.
4. Go to device manager, find the Realtek AC 97 audio item under "Sound, video, and game controllers". Right click on it and select UPDATE DRIVER
5. Select NO if it asks to connect to Windows Update, click NEXT
6. Select "Install from a list of specific location" and click NEXT
7. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and click NEXT
8. DE-select "Show compatible Hardware". CONEXANT should show up under manufacturer since you tried to install the driver earlier.
9. Click on CONEXANT on the left, then select "Conexant AC-Link Audio" on the right and click NEXT
The driver will install. It may ask you for the location of some files, point it to the directory the Conexant driver uncompressed to in step 3.
Reboot, and you should have working audio!

Jason,
Thanks for posting, I did the exact SAME THING... What video drivers did you end up finding?? -
For ATI chips I always use the NGO Optimized drivers.
They can be found at:
www.ngohq.com

aerospc inputs from u too would help... -
Hard to know what else to say... As long I UNchecked the Show Compatible Hardware, it showed up.

Someone should compare these to the OMega Drivers. Now it got me curious.
-
I bought a Gateway MX6450 and made the driver dvd if someone needs it. It is about 1.3 gig. These are just the driver and not the OS.
-
i would greatly appreciate the audio driver for the mx6450 as i have been unable to get any of the workaround to work. Thank you in advance.

HOW TO FIX AUDIO DRIVER on your Gateway MX6450 (2GHz AMD)
After a failed attempt to get linux working on my notebook, I was unable to get the sound working. Recovery CD does not have the drivers you will need to get your system up and running!!
Here is how I fixed the problem.
1.)
Download and attempt install of:
Conexant Audio Driver version 6.14.10.559
I downloaded mine from: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqnk/us/download/22901.html
or you can download from gateway.
- This install will most likely fail.
2.)
Reboot.
3.)
Goto Device Manager (Right-Click "MyComputer", select Properties, then choose HARDWARE tab, finally click "Device Manager" button )
4.)
Access your device to update driver - CHOOSE to the driver you want to install manually!! do not search or attempt loading from the DIR where the driver files are. (I've tried and failed) /
By choosing from a list of devices you can force the install of the correct drivers, specify the Conexiant sound driver then you will be asked to locate the file (camc6aud.sys) located in the path for your driver.
- Im not sure if this is the best driver but while your waiting for Gateway to send a DVD with your software and drivers - at least you'll have audio.
Definatly advise ordering a driver/software restore DVD from Gateway since it's not included. - Esp. if your going to format or partition for any reason
:gateway:
BTW - ATI drivers downloaded from ATI.com worked for video on Radeon 200M xpress. -
Send me a PM or Email if you dont want to have the file download public, or if you have other arrangments of transfering.
Thanks! -
hey thanks Itvenue... thanks to u my audio works now... thanks alot.. guys this works... finally have audio... later.... wayne
-
BillyGalbreath, If you do not already have the driver, pm me and I will email you the drivers they are only 1/2 meg zipped.
-
f3c... Do you have enough bandwidth to post the contents of the DVD somewhere?
Regarding Audio... I had a problem with RealTek AC97 Error -5009 and it wouldn't install. This, in turn, resulted in Conexant AC-Link Failure when running the setup program downloaded from Gateway's support site. Just in case anyone else did the same thing, here's the [simple] solution.
[Assuming you've downloaded the Conexant AC-Link download and ran as much of the setup as would take]
Go to device manager, double click on the Multimedia Audio Controller, click on the driver tab, click update driver. Choose "Install from a specific location". Next choose "Don't search. I will chose the driver to install". Locate the directory containing the files downloaded. Finally chose conexant. -
HP driver worked great, i'm so happy to have sound again.
-
-
Well, well.. I have figured it out.
If you go to Device Manager under Hardware. Instead of trying to get the Audio Controller to work. Try this method.
Go to Sound, video and games controllers
Right click on Audio Codec to Update Drivers
Click No, not this time for Hardware Update
Click on Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Click on Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install.
Click on Have Disk
Open the file ari2041a.inf from the extracted folder(s) that you have downloaded from Gateway which should be D00377-002-001
Conexant AC-Link Audio should appear
Hit Next
Hit Yes
Now you have a Audio Codecs problem. Don't worry.
Now go to Audio Controller
Right click on Audio Controller to Update Drivers
Click No, not this time for Hardware Update
Click on Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Click on Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install.
Scroll down to Sound, video and games controllers
Hit Next
Click on Conexant
Pick either Conexant AC-Link Audio Version
Hit Next. You will have a few pop up for missing files. Just redirect to the same folder D00377-002-001 and you will be missing a file. But do not worry about it.
After you have finish.. the audio controller will be installed.
Now back to the first step.
Right click to Update Drivers on Conexant AC-Link Audio that is not working
Click No, not this time for Hardware Update
Click on Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Click on Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install.
Click on Have Disk
Click on Audio Codecs
Hit Next
Now you should have sounds. -
Hello, I reformatted my harddrive without copying my drivers. I found and installed all drivers except sound. I followed JasonJoels direction for installing the sound driver but when i click on update driver for realtek and follow the steps, conexant doesnt show up. I was just wondering what you did to fix this and get your sound working?
-

MX6525 Sound Drivers for Vista
download it here: http://www.itvenue.net/forums/D00377-002-002V.exe
Of your looking for the XP version you can now find it on the Gateway website.
NOTICE: This download will expire on Jun'07 -
To the originator of this thread, THANK-YOU!!!!
I was tired of reinstalling Gateway's craplets, so figured I would just reinstalled XP, without backing up my drivers. All drivers worked from Gateway but their audio, but this workaround saved me a sleepless night of futility. I will be putting this on my blog and spreading it around to lots of other places, in the hopes that more people will be saved the 6 hours of struggle I went through.
Again, KUDOS!!! -
Right on the money! I found this thread doing a google search and was so impressed that it actually worked that I registered!
Gateway has a nasty habit of releasing hardware with specific operating systems and charging more for an XP Pro version. They make it almost impossible to find the correct drivers. I had the same problem with a Gateway PC that came pre-loaded with Windows ME several years ago, finally gave up trying to get the drivers and scrapped it.

Hello,
I have a Gateway 3550GZ / M210 laptop. And I tried the method of using "update drivers" instead of simply installing it. However no good for me. It still does not properly install. I did a lot of googling and one person pointed out that the driver I downloaded from Gateway for the 3550gz, is for Windows XP Home and I've upgraded to Windows XP Professional after a clean install.
I've tried the HP ones as well, and still no good. Any tips at all on what I can try next?
Some people said Gateway listed the wrong sound card and it should be an intel AC'97 not the conexant AC-Link. Any idea where I can try an intel ac'97 driver?
thank you!
